Organizational Announcement in Ethics and Compliance

Bringing safe, reliable and sustainable energy to our many customers around the world is important. How we do it is just as important which is why we rely on our five shared AES Values to guide our actions. Our Values help us to maintain the highest ethical standards in everything we do at AES.

As we shared in April, we have been in search of a new Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer (CECO). A CECO is responsible for leading our efforts to ensure our 21,000 people around the world understand and uphold our Values in all that they do. I'm pleased to announce today that we've selected Tom Stimson, who has been on the Ethics and Compliance team for the last four years, to be our new CECO.

BECOMING AN ENERGY STAR

Accelerating Global Sourcing Opportunities: Meet the teams that are making it happen

Global Category Management
Being an energy star means challenging ourselves to improve the way we do things. As previously shared, the Accelerate Global Sourcing Opportunities work stream's main objective is to aggregate demand through categories of spend, harmonize our sourcing processes and tools, and improve the management of our contracts and suppliers. The entire Supply Chain organization defined two task forces, the Global Category and Portfolio Management team and Global e-sourcing SAP Ariba implementation team, to reach its objective and deliver results.

The Global Category and Portfolio team works in conjunction with the plants and regional teams to forecast and develop procurement plans for non-fuel items for the next three to four years. The team is working to find ways to combine purchases on a regional and global level.

ALWAYS ON FOR SAFETY
Conducting an effective safety walk

When Safety Walks are based on best practices, leaders can effectively strengthen AES' overall safety management system. High-quality safety walks include six components. Last week, we learned about steps one and two, which are scheduling and preparing for a safety walk. This week, we're focusing on steps three and four.

Engage in an Open Dialogue. Once you have scheduled, prepared and observed the work activity for a Safety Walk, it is time to engage in an open dialogue with the team. Approach the team in a work pause so they don't lose focus and cause an incident. An effective safety walk starts with an open dialogue. Introduce yourself if people don't know you and let them know you are performing a safety walk. Engagement is vital, so tell people you expect to have a two-way conversation and demonstrate you are open to listening to the team's ideas on how to work in a safer way. During the conversations with people, think about the correct application of a hierarchy of controls and check if its application is working properly. In this context, many times we need to heavily rely on administrative controls and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Make sure people understand administrative controls including policies, safety cardinal rules, standards and operating procedures. When it comes to PPE, make sure that people are using the right type of equipment and that it is in good condition. Finally, if you make a recommendation for change, explain the reason for the suggested changes and never take it personal.
Mariya Ilieva is Always on for Safety

Mariya works as an Executive Assistant at the AES Sofia office in Bulgaria, part of the Europe SBU. She has worked with AES for the last three years and has demonstrated a strong commitment to safety. She thinks that being Always On for Safety is important at work and at home. "I consider my office my second home and my colleagues my family members," Mariya said. She understands that being Always On must be a lifestyle because unsafe conditions don't give second chances when not properly mitigated. "I am a tennis player. There are good and bad days on the tennis court, but when it comes to safety, I make sure that there is never a bad day. There are no second chances in safety. That is why I make sure that we are focused and committed all the time. The smiles of people when everyone is safe at the office keep me motivated."

Sometimes committing to safety means going above and beyond our normal duties. That's exactly what Mariya does. She has taken Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) responsibilities at the Sofia Office over and above her normal duties and is the main EHS contact personfor the office. Mariya played a vital role in ensuring EHS requirements were met when the AES Sofia Office was set up. She takes responsibility in ensuring the day-to-day EHS needs are met, including the coordination of safety meetings and AES Global Safety Day events. Thanks Mariya, for putting safety first and for exemplifying what it means to be Always On for Safety.
