Greetings!

We are all working to ensure that AES is best positioned for the future. In doing so, questions about our strategy, initiatives and programs may arise. If you have a question or comment about the current state of affairs at AES, we encourage you to utilize the Ask the ELT survey. Ask the ELT is an anonymous tool that AES people can use to submit questions, comments and suggestions directly to the Executive Leadership Team (ELT). Questions are answered by an ELT member either in the Quarterly Update or through the Spotlight. Let your voice be heard today: www.ourAES.com/AsktheELT.

Deploy US Energy Resources for Regional Growth

Andrés Gluski, AES President and CEO, penned an article for Americas Quarterly discussing how the export of US natural gas to Latin America can promote collaboration and foster growth. The article is a series produced by Americas Quarterly that asked various leaders, "What would you tell the next US president about Latin America?" Americas Quarterly is an independent publication of Americas Society and Council of the Americas of which Andrés is Chairman. Read the full article here
BEHIND THE MW
AES and IPL leaders cut the ribbon on new energy storage array facility

AES and Indianapolis Power and Light (IPL) leaders cut the ribbon on the new IPL Advancion® Energy Storage Array Facility located at the Harding Street Generation Station. The Advancion Array is the first grid-scale, battery-based energy storage system to make a footprint in the 15-state Midcontinent Independent System Operation (MISO) region in the US. The IPL Advancion Array provides 20 MW of interconnected energy storage equivalent to 40 MW of flexible resources with unmatched operations flexibility. In addition, the facility will lower emissions by enabling more efficient dispatch of existing generating assets and support the ongoing integration of renewable power sources. AES and its Advancion energy storage platform were recently recognized with the 2016 International Edison Award for its contribution to the growth and integration of clean energy around the globe.

BECOMING AN ENERGY STAR
Knowledge sharing through the 5x5 work stream

Being an Energy Star means harnessing the skills and talents of our people to make AES stronger than ever before. Besides helping us to improve and harmonize processes, the 5x5 enables us to create a robust network of people geared towards achieving efficiency.

The formation of the global network of the 5x5 Process Leaders and work stream team members has encouraged knowledge sharing within the organization. As soon as a process is identified under the work stream, the network analyzes the current state and proposes a future state based on internal leading practices and other commonly agreed solutions. Once the gaps are identified, the team then plots out a transformational roadmap to address the gaps. All analysis and output are then made available to everyone on collaboration sites.

"The 5x5 methodology is fundamentally based on knowledge sharing and learning from experience," Accelerate 5x5 work stream leader Juan Carlos Gutierrez Larez said. It is an effective platform for learning and leadership. Local and process leads are given the opportunity to work in a global network which allows them to develop and show their leadership skills.

"The Energy Star program will be a success because we are all challenging the way we do things and implementing more efficient models. The Accelerate 5x5 work stream is no more than a harmonizing process that allows us to reach our objectives, strengthening AES' position to be more sustainable in the long term," Juan Carlos added.

ALWAYS ON FOR SAFETY
Conducting an effective safety walk

Safety Walks can positively influence AES' culture when they are performed properly. High-quality Safety Walks include six components. Let's take a look at the first two.

Schedule a Safety Walk. A good Safety Walk must start with good scheduling criteria. Safety Walks should be scheduled systematically, according to local, regional and global goals and based on incident trends. For example, when data shows an incident pattern with the same root causes and type of work, more resources should be assigned to do Safety Walks in that area. People may need help to mitigate hazards and stay safe. Also, leaders should try to perform Safety Walks at different times. Conducting Safety Walks at different times can help leaders observe their people during different shifts and times, when the conditions could be the most dangerous. It is highly recommended for leaders to do Safety Walks during emergency work. Leaders should be there to encourage people to stay safe.

Prepare for a Safety Walk. Once you have scheduled a Safety Walk according to strategic criteria, you are ready to prepare for it. First, you will need to select the type of activity that you will assess and prepare for its observation by reviewing documentation related to Lock Out, Tag Out (LOTO), previous Job Safety Analysis (JSA), Pre-Job Briefing (PJB) and work procedures. Then, identify the risks and hazards related to the activity you will observe and the methods used to mitigate them. Review the cardinal rules at your local business to make sure people follow them. Finally, have a JSA mindset to see the JSA as a process, not as a document. When you see the JSA as a process, it includes both the creation of a job safety analysis by the full crew who will perform a job and the discussion or pre-job briefing of all the hazards and risks related to the work. Having a JSA mindset also implies thinking about the related and unrelated situations that happen or could happen before and after the main work activity.
