BECOMING AN ENERGY STAR
Smart Maintenance work stream conducts training

Being an energy star means taking advantage of the diverse skills and talents of AES people around the world to improve how we do things. Last month, Javier Giorgio, Andes SBU President and Smart Maintenance work stream leader, led a two-day Smart Maintenance training session. The training participants included Performance Directors and Operations leaders from various SBUs. The training focused on the general Playbook process and tools as well as a rundown on the procedures for unit selection, data gathering, planning and performing the on site assessment and last business decision process. The standardized Playbook for the Smart Maintenance work stream was produced as part of the successful completion of the first Smart Maintenance assessment on Ventanas 3, a coal generation plant in Chile, managed by AES Gener.
BEHIND THE MW
Harding Street gas conversion construction update

Currently, we have more than 4,000 MW under construction in six countries. One of our innovative construction projects includes Indianapolis Power & Light's Harding Street Generating Station fuel conversion of 650 MW from coal to natural gas. The project has been managed on time and on budget to dispatch capability to the three units at Harding Street with the contractors logging more than 800,000 man-hours with no Loss Time Incidents (LTIs) and an OSHA Recordable Rate of 0.25. Once the project is completed, the plant will continue to provide reliable, safe and sustainable energy to the people in the greater Indianapolis area. The fuel conversion from coal to natural gas significantly reduces harmful greenhouse gases as well as improves the operational flexibility of the facility to meet the area's market needs.

ALWAYS ON FOR SAFETY
Influence of Safety Walks on AES' Safety Culture

Earlier this week, a new online safety training course was launched to more than 2,000 AES people managers and contractors. "This course is the response to the patterns observed after analyzing the Safety Walk Program performance," said Bernerd Da Santos, AES SVP and COO, during a call he hosted to introduce the training course. The course highlights areas identified as safety gaps coming from the Safety Walks performed by AES leaders in the past ten years and the overall AES Safety Walk program. The training also reviews the six steps of high quality safety walks and the characteristics of each. At AES, Safety Walks are important because it gives leaders the opportunity to see how all the Safety Management System components work together. Safety Walks are also a good opportunity for leaders to see people work and provide real-time feedback. More information will be shared in the coming weeks to help us create and sustain a workplace free of incidents at AES.
Leander Romero is Always on for Safety

Leander is an accountant for the MCAC SBU finance group in Panama and has worked with AES for nine years. Leander volunteers as a brigade team member and actively participates in drills at his office, but his commitment to safety goes well beyond the workplace.  Exemplifying his commitment, Leander used his Stop Work Authority to halt a contractor conducting work unsafely in his home.

"A technician was installing a refrigeration unit for the air conditioning system at my home. He was climbing a ladder in an unsafe way. The person was stretching over the ladder with only one foot barely touching the top step. I used my Stop Work Authority and found an adequate ladder so this person could resume his work safely," explained Leander.

When asked about the meaning of being always on for safety, Leander said, "To me, it means being aware of my surroundings, both at work and at home with my family, and helping others embrace this safety culture."

Thanks, Leander for putting safety first and helping others develop a safety mindset.
