LEADERSHIP MATTERS
Monthly Safety Message from Mark Green

At AES, we put safety first. Safety comes first for our people, our contractors and the individuals in our communities. All work activities worldwide need to be conducted in a safe manner that promotes personal health, safety and well-being. It's about keeping our people, our contractors and the people in the communities we serve safe, each and every day.

We care about the safety of our people. We have made it a priority to strengthen our safety culture over the last 10 years. By putting a systematic and consistent management program in place, with ways to measure and improve processes and procedures, we have avoided 700 Lost Time Incidents (LTIs) for AES people and contractors over the past 10 years.

We care about the safety of our contractors. When it comes to safety, there is no difference between our people and contractors. We made the commitment to reduce our contractors' LTIs by 50 percent during 2016 and we are on track to accomplish this goal this year as a result of action plans we put in place to improve the management of our contractors. More than 150 short, medium and long term action plans were established. In 2016, we have already fully implemented 20 of these plans. The plans target improving contract terms and conditions, safety culture including upholding AES Values and Safety Beliefs, knowledge and implementation of AES' standards including Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), increased supervision, targeted safety walks and post-work evaluations.

CYERSECURITY
Monthly Cybersecurity Message from
Scott Goodhart

Cybersecurity is an issue of safety that starts with our people at AES -- we must put safety first when leveraging the power of the Internet both at work and at home. In an effort to highlight the importance of cybersecurity as an issue of safety, Internal Communications and Cybersecurity have teamed  together to create a cybersecurity section on aes.com. The cyber page highlights the AES Cyber 6 - six important behavioral takeaways from our Cyber Ninja Guide. The Cyber 6 was created to educate, enable and empower our people and contractors to use the Internet safely. While these tips were originally created for our people and contractors, they can be useful for anyone. The link to the cybersecurity page can be found here. If you have any questions related to cybersecurity or the AES Cyber 6, please contact your local cybersecurity team.

Tokyo Electric leaders visit IPL in hopes of collaboration

Just recently, leaders of Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) visited DP&L and IPL, both distribution utilities in the US SBU. TEPCO leaders visited both sites for a system review and to have a better understanding how the two utilities operate. They spent the day  with US SBU leaders reviewing a number of topics such as asset management, smart grid development and customer satisfaction. Moving forward, TEPCO officers are interested in potentially collaborating with AES in the area of transmission and distribution operations.

AES witnessed Panama's expanded canal opening

AES recently witnessed the opening of Panama's expanded canal.  MCAC SBU President Manuel Pérez Dubuc, AES Panama Market Business Leader Miguel Bolinaga, AES Corporation Vice President and Chief Stakeholder Officer Scarlett Alvarez, AES General Counsel Brian Miller and other AES people participated in this event. The expansion marks the start to Panama's efforts to increase its global shipping capacity. The expansion means a quicker path between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans for ships carrying up to 14,000 containers. The $5.4B project to expand the 102-year old canal took 10 years to build with 40,000 workers.

AES Eletropaulo implemented APEX project to reuse concrete poles

Reuse and save. That's just what AES Eletropaulo, part of the Brazil SBU, is doing.  The team recently started an APEX project to reuse some of its utility poles. To kick off the project, AES Eletropaulo Logistics Support Office supported by the Environment Management and Technical Services Management implemented a process to review the procurement and placement process for concrete poles.

Previously, we sold old poles for proper disposal and purchased new poles to be installed. The team recognized that some of the old poles were still in great condition and could still be used. The new APEX project will do a detailed technical analysis and test the pole resistance to determine if the pole can continue to be used. After the tests, a technical report proving the possibility of reusing the pole will be published. A pole must have less than 15 years of use and may not have any type of split or crack to be reused.

Starting in June, the project will save roughly 215 poles per month. The project is expected to save US $0.34M and 26,500 thousand liters of water per year while avoiding the consumption of other materials such as cement, grit, sand and gravel.
