A Message from CEO Andrés Gluski:
AES announces the sale of AES Sul
AES just announced the sale of AES Sul in Brazil, taking a strategic step in our plans for the Brazil SBU to focus on areas in which we can build a competitive advantage.
AES purchased Sul, an electricity distribution company located in the southern region of Brazil, in 1997. It was our first business in the country. Over the last 18 plus years, AES has grown to be one of the largest private sector electricity operators in Brazil. We have been dedicated to improving the lives of the people we serve in Brazil and AES Sul has been an important part of these efforts.
Looking ahead, we are facing some challenging market conditions in Brazil. We remain committed to the market for the long-term despite these challenges. Last year, we completed a restructuring of our companies in the country. The restructuring established AES Tietę as our exclusive growth platform for power generation. At the same time, we increased our focus at our distribution businesses to run all of our facilities and operations in a sustainable way. Part of those efforts required us to increase the financial stability of AES Sul by investing in restructuring its debt. We also began to consider strategic options for running AES Sul in the future.
