OPGC II Safety Rover Program
OPGC II, a construction project in India and part of the Asia SBU, recently started a program to reinforce AES' Safety Beliefs, Values and procedures. To strengthen our commitment to put safety first, the Safety Rover Program aims to enhance the safety culture at our various construction sites.
Implementing the program at OPGC is critical as the number of people working at the site is increasing with its construction activities underway. The program brings Safety Champions from various AES SBUs to review current practices, compare those practices to best practices and coach existing personnel to ensure the proper steps are taken for every task being performed by OPGC people and contractors.

Accelerating our HR Transformation
As part of our Energy Star program, we are currently working on accelerating our HR transformation program by delivering and managing global HR resources from a more strategic business perspective. The effort involves harmonizing and standardizing our practices, streamlining our HR service delivery model and leveraging HR shared services. In an interview with AES Vice President for Global HR Services and Technology and work stream team leader, Aldemaro Algarra, he shared that this transformation program was conceptualized even before Energy Star which started this year.
The HR Performance2 work stream is fundamentally composed of the creation of HR shared services centers, transitioning to one global provider for delivering payroll services, and continuing our Workday adoption by incorporating the management of our recruitment, onboarding and absence management processes into the system. We are also working to leverage our functional areas to make sure that we have Centers of Expertise and our local HR teams are aligned with the programs that are necessary to support our global needs from a Total Rewards, Talent Management, Internal Communications, and Technology and Solutions perspective.

IPL's Green Power Option ranks among the top in the US
Indianapolis Power & Light (IPL), part of the US SBU, was recently ranked by the Department of Energy Laboratories (NREL) as one of the nation's "Top 10 in Green Power Sales" for 2015. IPL was ranked number nine in the listing. Last year alone, IPL sold 182,496 Megawatt Hours (MWhs) of green power equivalent to the annual power usage of almost 16,700 average American home. IPL's Green Power Option allows customers to specify an amount equal to 15, 25, 50 or 100 percent of their monthly electricity use to be generated by green power. Customers often buy green power to offset their carbon footprint.

Replicating Best Practices
At AES, we strive for operational excellence by optimizing the use of our resources and replicating best practices. The Global Replication Steering Committee oversees a coordinated approach to replication and has been working to identify projects that should be accelerated in each SBU. To select projects that should be replicated globally, the Committee evaluated projects from the 2010 - 2015 APEX Global Awards and Innovation Congresses. The team selected the five projects below and the first two projects are being integrated into current Energy Star program work streams. Congratulations to all the projects and people who worked on them.
Projects for replication
1. Gas Turbine Rotor Life Time Extension Evaluation
2. Risk Register Makes Allocating Resources Easier
3. Detecting Whispers To Prevent A Boom
4. Ultra-Fast Arc Protection Reduces Fatalities, Risks and Damage
5. Installing Variable Speed Drives
Telepresence sessions will be scheduled to learn more about these projects. Please reach out to your SBU Replication lead to participate. You can also search for the white papers on the Outlet for additional information.

AES Tietê gives out one million seedlings for the Atlantic Forest conservation
AES Tietê, part of the Brazil SBU, recently produced more than one million native seedlings for the conservation of the Atlantic Forest through the Seedling Production Program. The program started its seeding activities in 1979. To date, the nursery produced more than one million seedlings per year featuring 210 plant species from both the Cerrado and Atlantic forests.
The seed banks are near our reservoirs in Tietê, Pardo, Mogi and Grande river basins. The locations were georeferenced and mapped out based on the conduciveness of the area for seedling growth.
The Seedling Production Program is part of AES Tietê's Flora Handling and Conservation Program, and promotes restoration for the flora and fauna in AES Tietê's Reservoir Margins.

IPL Petersburg MATS Project Achieves Substantial Completion
The Mercury and Air Toxic Standards (MATS) brownfield construction project at IPL Petersburg, part of the US SBU, reached its substantial completion milestone on April 8, 2016. There are four thermal generating units at this facility that had the design provisions installed to meet the US Environmental Protection Agency's Ruling.
Units 1, 2 and 4 achieved substantial completion last September 2015 while Unit 3 was completed last April. The completion of the project is a significant milestone for the Petersburg plant and the US SBU since this will enable them to provide long term power with reduced emissions.
The EPC team was composed of the Indiana Electric Partners and Owner's Engineer Black & Veatch with oversight by the AES' Global Engineering and Construction group. The project was completed safely with no Loss Time Incidents over 2,000,000 man-hours and an OSHA Recordable Rate of 0.37. In addition, the installation of an ash containment system along with a calcium bromide oxidation system, a wet sorbent system and a powdered activated carbon system on each unit was completed under budget and on schedule.

Gustavo Acosta is Always On for Safety
Gustavo is an Instrument and Control Lead at AES Puerto Rico, part of the MCAC SBU. He believes that being Always On for Safety means having a safety-oriented mindset. "A safety hero must have safety in mind in everything he does. A safety hero is someone who looks out for the safety of his colleagues making sure they work safely, but also, someone who puts safety first not only at work but also in their personal life," explained Gustavo. Part of this mindset is having the awareness to look at incidents as a learning opportunity. "In order to avoid incidents, we should not ignore safety events, even if they are perceived as minor. I talk with my peers about safety lessons learned and about incidents that occurred at other AES locations and locally," added Gustavo.
