LEADERSHIP MATTERS
Monthly Safety Message from Marty Crotty

Safety comes first at AES. It is our first AES Value and comes before everything else we do because we care for our people and we want them to go home to their family and their community safely each day. Our goal is to make that possible for each AES person and contractor by creating and sustaining an incident-free workplace. While we're not there yet, we know it can be a reality for AES if we continue to take proactive measures to keep people safe. One of those measures is understanding and sharing what happened when an incident does occur so corrective actions can be taken not just at one location, but across AES' locations worldwide.
BECOMING AN ENERGY STAR
Global Internal Audit team completes Review Role and Scope of Internal Audit work stream

The Internal Audit team recently completed the Review Role and Scope of Internal Audit work stream which forms part of the Energy Star Program. The work stream will contribute to our goal of achieving the US $150M annual savings and revenue enhancement by 2018.

By focusing on the core Internal Audit objectives as well as right-sizing the audit plan of the SBU structures, we were able to:
  • Reduce audits in our audit plan by 10%;
  • Reduce participation in Advisory projects; and
  • Size the Global Internal Audit team to support the updated scope.
These goals were achieved without increasing the company's risk exposure or eliminating work that was required for compliance or regulatory purposes. Through this work stream, we were able to save almost US $1M per year in global Internal Audit expense.

Moving forward, we will continue to maximize efficiency opportunities within Internal Audit and keep you updated on the progress we're making in our other Energy Star work streams.

AES US SBU hosts inaugural Innovation Day

The US SBU recently hosted its first AES US Innovation Day. More than 50 AES people from Indiana and Ohio met for a full day of knowledge sharing and brainstorming. This event included opportunities for the attendees to discuss questions about the future of the energy industry and come up with ways the US SBU could encourage innovation.

AES US COO Andy Horrocks' keynote address encouraged participants to take risks, not be afraid to fail and create value. "If you are not creating value you are destroying value," he said.
