BEHIND THE MW
AES Tietę and AES Uruguaiana spearhead development of Smart-Sen

To minimize the problems caused by the intermittent nature of renewable energy sources and improve the supply quality, AES Uruguaiana and AES Tietę, the generation businesses of AES Brazil, are leading a research and development (R&D) project called Smart-Sen. The project is a new mathematical model that identifies uncertainties of energy sources and correctly models the dispatch of such sources.

Optimizing the dispatch of system plants will be possible using this new model. As an example, the calculations will assess whether there are transmission restrictions at any point or when the wind energy generation at the region usually varies. The model enables the identification of where there are more transmission lines or energy conservation batteries.

Jordan dignitaries explore energy storage with AES

As part of a Reverse Trade Mission (RTM) related to Battery Energy Storage organized by the United States Trade and Development Agency (USTDA), AES hosted a delegation from Jordan in Arlington. The visiting delegation from Jordan included the Minister of Energy, senior representatives from the utility company National Electric Power Company (NEPCO), Ministry of Energy, regulatory commission and distribution companies.

The two-day visit started with a presentation by AES' senior management team on our experience in the power business and building grid-scale energy storage projects. The Jordan delegation was brought to the Warrior Run Advancion Energy Storage Array on the second day. The site visit gave the delegates the opportunity to take a closer look at the first deployment of AdvancionŽ4, the next generation of battery-based energy storage.

APEX AWARD WINNERS
Inventory and Supply Chain Optimization

At this year's 2015 APEX Global Awards, 17 projects were presented as examples of successful performance excellence efforts in the company. Our second place winners in the replication category are OPGC and AES San Nicolas for implementing Inventory and Supply Chain Optimization projects.

At OPGC in India, part of the Asia SBU, they were challenged by the availability of material specifications, duplicated materials and codes, and overstock of inventory. They improved their process by standardizing their naming and storage convention, capturing images of active terms and setting up of material specifications. By optimizing processes, they saved US $60K from duplicated items and reduced inventory by 2.5 percent with the potential to save US $390K  in three years.
