AES Named to World's Most Ethical Companies List

Earlier this week, AES was named to Ethisphere's list of World's Most Ethical Companies for the third consecutive year. This achievement demonstrates that how we accomplish our successes and deliver on our mission is as important as the services we provide. Ethics, integrity and compliance are the foundation and principles that guide our company and our people. The Ethisphere Institute, an independent center of research that promotes best practices in corporate ethics and compliance, honors superior achievement through The World's Most Ethical Companies recognition program. This program recognizes companies that truly go beyond making statements about doing business ethically and translate those words into action. Honorees not only promote ethical business standards and practices internally, they also exceed legal compliance minimums and shape future industry standards by introducing best practices today. This year's 132 honorees span 21 countries and five continents and represent over 50 industries.

OUR PEOPLE ARE OUR ENERGY
Fourth Graders Learn about Electricity and Safety

At AES, we put safety first at work, at home and in our communities. More than a dozen volunteers in Arlington bring that message to public schools from March through May every year. This week, AES COO, Bernerd Da Santos taught 25 children about AES, electricity generation and safety. The activity forms part of a Spanish immersion program and was conducted in Spanish.

AES volunteers teach fourth graders from the local public schools in Arlington County about how electricity is generated, best safety practices and energy efficiency techniques. This yearly activity started last year after AES signed a partnership with the Arlington Public Schools. The classes are comprised of a theoretical part and a practical exercise where students have the opportunity to generate electricity with a hand-cranked device.

Biggest Sustainability Initiative of AES Panama

AES Panama, part of the MCAC SBU, is celebrating a recent sustainable initiative it undertook to improve its operational efficiency. Esti hydroelectric plant located in the Chiriquí province recently installed a 504 kWp solar power plant that provides 100% of the energy required for its operations. This project is the biggest "Green" initiative developed by AES in Panama. By looking at ways to take care of the environment, AES Panama constantly reinvents how they do things making their operations efficient and eco-friendly.

Our winner this year is from the US SBU. Butch Haganman is a Safety Specialist from Indianapolis Power and Light who is Always On for Safety. In 1996, Butch suffered a near-fatal incident working as a Lines Apprentice and came back to work to help others switch on and stay on for safety. In 2015, Butch completed more than 20 IPL Live Line Demonstrations to police, firemen, contractors, school children and the general public in Indianapolis and spoke to various IPL groups, police and fire department recruit classes, local Indianapolis businesses, and schools about the importance of safety. APEX AWARD WINNERS
Pre-Comprehensive Rotor Inspection

At this year's 2015 APEX Global Awards, 17 projects were presented as examples of successful performance excellence efforts in the company. Our first place winner in the replication category replicated a 2013 Innovation Congress paper from AES Merida. The project was named Pre-Comprehensive Rotor Inspection, from AES Andres, part of the MCAC SBU. Melvin Mateo accepted the award on behalf of the project team. At AES Andres, the gas turbine OEM recommended a comprehensive rotor inspection after 12 years which would take place during the second major outage scheduled in 2015 resulting in an impact of US $14M on the budget. AES Andres benefited from the lessons of Merida III's successful delay of the comprehensive rotor inspection with compliance from AGIC, Global Risk and Mitsubishi. The team performed an intense pre-inspection of the rotors involving three parties including the original manufacturer, non-destructive evaluation provider and a third party risk assessor recommending the extension. The comprehensive rotor inspection was delayed by six years, representing a savings of US $4.7M NPV. Congratulations to the team for their commitment to operational excellence.
ALWAYS ON FOR SAFETY
Paulo Linares Always On for Safety

Paulo is an Operations Manager and a Safety Champion at AES Serviços, a company that is part of the Brazil SBU. When you are always on for safety you not only look out for yourself but also for the safety of your peers. Being on for safety means thinking above and beyond the minimum safety requirements to mitigate potential risks you identify.

Recently, a team of network construction electricians was working on a project to replace old wooden poles with new concrete poles in a rural area. Paulo observed that electricians were going into the woods without wearing additional personal protective equipment (PPE) to protect them from poisonous animal bites. As a result, he asked people to wear additional PPE. Unfortunately, not all people followed the recommendation at first. However, Paulo insisted and encouraged people to wear the right PPE explaining the benefits of this practice until they started using the equipment, got used to wearing it and made it part of their regular work equipment.

Thanks to Paulo for going above and beyond to make sure people work safely and helping them embrace new practices to improve their work conditions.
