Monthly Safety Leadership Message from Manuel Perez Dubuc
At AES, we believe all incidents can be prevented. Preventing all incidents means we have to be proactive, and stay a step ahead of what is going on in our work environments to address risks and hazards. A Safety Walk is one of the great tools we have in place as part of our global Safety Management System to help us stop incidents before they happen.
During a Safety Walk, all steps are taken to prevent incidents by leaders and people on the job. When someone on a Safety Walk engages with you, celebrate the things you are doing right and make sure you understand the opportunities you have to improve. Ask questions if anything is unclear. A set of fresh eyes sees things we may not see and can help us to make our workplaces even safer.

Procure to Pay Process Improvement
At this year's 2015 APEX Global Awards, 17 projects were presented as examples of successful performance excellence efforts in the company. One of the programs presented was Procure to Pay Process Improvement, from AES Kazakhstan, part of the Europe SBU. The project won first place in the US $2 to $10M category. Supply chain is a major function at AES Kazakhstan as purchasing of goods and services represents 64 percent of the budget. To reach the next maturity level in the procure to pay (P2P) process, three areas of focus were established including implementation of best practices, making the P2P smart and clear and gaining $2M from the budget and G&A reductions. Solutions included the implementation of purchasing category and KPI systems, the launch of a supply chain help desk and the creation of a supply chain web page under AES Kazakhstan's website. The team also centralized 80 percent of addressable procurement budgets, sourced planning system and automated processes with ERP. The expected savings over five years is estimated at US $4M. Congratulations to the team for their commitment to operational excellence.

Diego Díaz is Always On for Safety
Diego is an Instrument Technician at AES Itabo, a generation plant in the Dominican Republic, part of the MCAC SBU. Before joining AES, he thought that being safe was an exclusive term used by the engineering team, "To me, safety was something you would only hear in an engineering work environment-we have to comply with safety procedures all the time. When I joined AES Dominicana, being safe meant something else. Being safe means being Always On for Safety. It means integrating safety in everything I do both inside and outside the company."
When safety becomes part of your personal beliefs, you are more able to motivate and encourage others to be safe. "It is something I am called to share with my family and friends, something to be practiced always. No matter where you are, safety must be part of everything you do," Diego reaffirmed. At this level of safety awareness and ownership, people are not afraid of exercising their Stop Work Authority because there is a strong personal belief that an activity must be stopped when an unsafe condition or behavior takes place.
