Feature Story:
Growing the business with Energy Storage
Company Confidential

Greetings!

Congratulations to the Zeeland Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) team in the Netherlands, part of the Europe SBU, for receiving this quarter's Speedy award. Part of the 10X10 initiative, the Zeeland BESS project is on track to reach commercial operations in less than 12 months since approval and 18 month from idea. Zeeland will be the largest battery project in Europe and will be the first BESS project participating in the Dutch ancillary services market. The rapid execution is the result of close cooperation, shared objectives and innovative approaches of the Energy Storage Center of Excellence (CoE) in Arlington and the team on the ground. The Speedy award recognizes a team that is working quickly to make significant progress on our growth objectives.

Congratulations to the Zeeland BESS team.

RESOURCING FOR GROWTH

Growing the business with Energy Storage

We are at a critical point for AES as we execute our plans to continue to grow the company in areas that will best position us for the future. One of those areas is Energy Storage. To build on our market-leading position and realize our full potential in the markets we operate in, we must work together as a team and work quickly. Earlier this month, we hosted a training session for 60+ AES people including Market Business Leaders and Business Development professionals to arm them with the information and tools they needed to help us grow our Energy Storage footprint in 2015 and beyond.
CYBERSECURITY
Monthly Cybersecurity Message

In today's hyper-connected world, individuals rely on mobile applications to carry out everyday activities and business more than ever before. With the wide range of apps available for download, we are able to access email, shop, pay bills, transfer funds and even instant message with friends and colleagues across the globe for no charge. While these mobile applications serve as a convenient means of conducting business and completing tasks, there is a risk associated with downloading mobile applications, even if they are located in the app store of your smart phone. Such risk was highlighted earlier this week when several Chinese applications available for download in the app store were reportedly infected with malware. This incident underscores the importance of adhering to the following guidance when downloading mobile applications:

AES builds relationships at solar conference

Earlier this month, AES participated in the Solar Power International (SPI) conference held in Anaheim, CA. With representation from six different markets, AES people held over 65 meetings with potential customers and partners, and educated thousands of people on how we are improving lives and empowering customers through a new energy network that builds on the best elements of the grid with resilient, distributed energy resources at or near the point of consumption. SPI is North America's premier business-to-business event for professionals in solar energy and related fields with more than 16,000 solar energy industry professionals from 75+ countries in attendance. To learn more about how AES is building a new energy network, visit AES Distributed Energy's website to view an updated fact sheet and video.
AES celebrates decade-long link with UIster Wildlife

This month, AES UK & Ireland celebrated a decade of working in partnership with a local environmental non-governmental organization, Ulster Wildlife. The relationship began 10 years ago with the discovery of a globally rare bee orchid at Ballylumford Power Station. This partnership was celebrated during AES UK & Ireland's Environment Week which included a range of events such as a family wildlife day at Antrim Castle, biodiversity action days at Ballylumford and Kilroot Power Stations, and a volunteering day at a nationally important nature reserve. AES people took part in hands-on conservation work within the power plant sites, building and installing nest boxes for barn owls and birds, constructing an insect hotel and removing grass to create wildflower meadows. A special, pocket-sized Wildlife Identification Guide was produced, illustrating all of the priority species and protected species found on our sites, including Irish hares, peregrine falcons and seals.
PEOPLE PAGES
Meet Pete Batrowny

The safety and security of our people, our contractors and the communities we serve come before everything we do. At a global level, that requires having the right programs, training and support as we work towards creating and sustaining a workplace free of incidents. Our Global Environmental, Health, Safety and Security (EHS&S) team plays an important role working closely with the SBUs in developing these programs, rolling out training and providing support to our businesses. To lead these global programs, Pete Batrowny, Global EHS Director, and interim leader of the Global EHS team has assumed the permanent role of Managing Director, Global EHS&S. Pete brings more than 25 years of operational and EHS experience to the job, including 16 years with AES.
INNOVATION
2015 AES Innovation Congress Award Winner Spotlight

Presenter and author Gaelle Burkhart along with co-authors, Scarlett Alvarez, Adriana Roccaro and Madelka McCalla, all from AES Arlington, received second place in the Market and Organizational Engagement category with the project: AES Takes Charge of Stakeholder Relationships with a Unique System and Exclusive Software Tool. Until recently, AES lacked a common methodology to keep track of and prioritize stakeholders; SBUs often relied on cumbersome Excel spreadsheets. Without tools to manage these stakeholder relationships, businesses tended to react to problems as they happened, creating unnecessary stress for people and costly solutions for the company. The Global Stakeholder Management Team and the Arlington IT team collaborated on proprietary tools to develop strong and strategic stakeholder engagement plans.
