Felipe Cerón participates in Council for the Americas event

Felipe Cerón, AES Andes SBU President, participated alongside other public and private sector leaders in a seminar sponsored by the Council for the Americas and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Chile. The seminar, entitled Latin American Cities Conferences: Santiago, discussed business perspectives, economic growth and progress in the energy sector in Chile. The audience included diplomatic officials and representatives from various companies. On the topic of progress, Felipe advocated for speedier permitting processes for growth and noted, "A large hydroelectric project needs not only an environmental permit, but also five hundred extra additional permits." He discussed how it is essential to progress to improve the regulatory framework and better expedite permitting processes.

INNOVATION
2015 AES Innovation Congress Award Winner Spotlight

Presenter and author Wagner Lopes, along with co-authors Jose Michelin, Odemberg Veronez, Fabiana Marolo de Oliveira Menezes, Gisele Scavassa and Paola Bocardo, from the Brazil SBU, received first place in the Applied Technologies category with the project: Drone Oversight Makes Reservoirs Safer, More Productive and Profitable. AES Tietê operates 12 hydropower plants and is responsible for the land surrounding its hydropower facilities usually located in rough terrains. Several service companies were employed at significant cost to monitor reservoir land and water areas. The team found the answer in a combination of satellite imaging, Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and drone technology. Using drones that work with mapping systems, they can watch the land more closely than ever before. Response times to weather, theft, trespassing and other situations have been dramatically improved, while the need for manpower has reduced significantly. Drone technology has huge potential when it comes to land management and protection. Sites that were previously inaccessible can be accessed in minutes by drones that can scan nine square kilometers in half an hour. Drones are affordable and simple enough to use that virtually any AES unit can integrate them into its operations and geo-catalog software makes it possible to take the data produced by different assets and put it to use quickly, effectively and affordably. For more information, review the project summary here or search for the full white paper on the Outlet.
ALWAYS ON FOR SAFETY
Gary Guzman and Justin Gordon are Always on for Safety

Gary and Justin are technicians at AES Palm Springs, a wind facility located in the US SBU. They understand that they are not only responsible for their own safety but also for the safety of others. As a result, Gary and Justin decided to improve the safety of yaw brake replacements on a particular type of wind turbine generator (Mitsubishi 600 kW). This not only contributes to the safety of the team but also reduces the time people are exposed to various ergonomic risks.
