BEHIND THE MWs

AES Europe breaks ground for new battery storage facility

AES held a groundbreaking for its first energy storage project in the Netherlands earlier this week. The Advancion energy storage array will provide power during peak usage times and will balance supply and demand more efficiently on the electric grid with 10 MW of interconnected energy storage, equivalent to 20 MW of flexible resource. The Advancion array will also improve opportunities for the integration of renewable energy sources in Europe. The project is expected to be completed and in operation by the end of 2015.

AES Brazil releases new brand positioning

Last month, AES Brazil's leadership announced its new brand positioning, Jeito de Ser da AES (AES' Way of Living). More than 300 leaders from AES Sul, AES Tietê, AES Uruguaiana, AES Serviços and AES Eletropaulo attended the unveiling hosted by AES Brazil SBU President, Britaldo Soares, and his leadership team. To celebrate the new brand positioning, each attendee received a folder featuring the new tagline, brand attributes and pocket guide for consultation. The new positioning includes the three key attributes that AES Brazil people must keep at all times: be relentless, careful and aware at every consultancy or service rendered.

COMMUNITY MATTERS

AES Philippines and Typhoon Yolanda

In November 2013, Typhoon Yolanda (international name: Haiyan) affected some 16 million people in the Philippines taking the lives of 6,300 people and displacing more than four million people in 44 provinces. In response to this disaster, AES people from across the company rallied together to provide relief. Assistance provided included:

  • 50 water filters that were immediately dispersed to people in Leyte and Tacloban
  • Psycho-social intervention for Typhoon Yolanda survivors, in partnership with the De La Salle University
  • Feeding programs for transient survivors who were temporarily displaced to Manila

AES people also raised relief funds for the victims of this tragedy and our AES Philippines Foundation's work with Habitat for Humanity has culminated in the turnover of 25 permanent houses, benefitting displaced families in Kawayanville, Tacloban City.

AES Laurel Mountain people donate blood for community

No matter where we are located in the world, we are dedicated to the communities we serve. AES Laurel Mountain, located in West Virginia and part of the US SBU, recently worked to serve its community with a blood drive. Every year, AES Laurel Mountain and another local business co-host a blood drive with the American Red Cross three to four times a year. The team recently completed their second blood drive of the year with over 60% participation. To date, AES Laurel Mountain has contributed 30 hours of volunteer time towards assisting the local Red Cross in 2015.

ALWAYS ON FOR SAFETY

Joe Watts is Always On for Safety

Joe Watts works with the performance team at the AES Warrior Run plant located in Maryland and part of the US SBU. He is a Contract Monitor for the construction and installation of the new energy storage facility located near the plant. When you are Always On for Safety, you look out for others' safety and that's exactly what Joe does. Every day, he ensures contractors are safe by performing observations, being available to answer any questions and paying special attention to the details. As an example, during the energy storage facility construction, Joe identified a potential fall hazard. Through effective communication, Joe was able to recommend a suitable method that permanently eliminated what could have been a reoccurring fall hazard exposure for his teammates and contractors.
