A Fatality at AES Sul in Brazil
Putting safety first is not only our first Value, but a commitment we make to our people, our contractors and the communities we serve. I'm very sad to report that on Saturday, June 20, a contractor from SCALCO working at AES Sul in the Roca Sales municipality of Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil, died as a result of injuries he sustained while on the job after coming in contact with a pole that touched a medium-voltage network. The contractor was part of a crew that was replacing wooden poles with concrete poles in a rural area. The crew was using an auto crane, a crane mounted to a truck, to put the pole inside a hole when it came in contact with the energized system. Two linemen wearing insulated gloves were using ropes to move the pole, as defined by safety procedures. They also were being observed by a supervisor. An investigation is already underway to determine the full details of why and how the contractor, who was a crew member but was not involved with that activity, came in contact with the charged pole. We do know that the injured person was not wearing insulated gloves and, against all operational procedures, he touched the pole with his bare hands which is when the fatal incident occurred.

AES Gener receives approval for electrical interconnection with Argentina
AES Gener, part of the Andes SBU, received approval from the Chilean Government for a bidirectional transfer of energy between Chile and Argentina through the transmission lines owned by AES Gener in the northern region of the country. AES Gener will be able to use its 345 kV transmission line interconnecting the Great Northern Interconnected Grid (SING) and the Argentine Interconnection Grid (SADI). The regulation will allow energy exchanges between both countries for a mutual benefit. This situation will not only provide both countries with energy security, but it will also improve the grid frequency levels and the back-up capacity in case of emergency situations, such as earthquakes and tsunamis. "With the bidirectional transfer in place, the grid frequency level will be steadier, thus improving the quality of the electrical grid in the North," said Felipe Cerón, Andes SBU President.
