Structuring the Brazil SBU for growth

Today, we recognize Global Safety Day. It's the one day each year that all AES people around the world stop work to come together to discuss and reenergize themselves for our first Value, Put Safety First. In 2014, we launched Always On for Safety. Always On means always doing things the right way, the safe way. When you're Always On, you're looking out for you, your team members and your family on the job, at home and in your community. When each AES person does it, we can prove an incident-free workplace is a reality and we'll help create an incident-free world.

As a continuation of last year's theme, we must not only be Always On but we have to make sure we Switch On and Stay On for Safety. To celebrate our people that are Always On and those that Switch On and Stay On, we have launched a new section of aes.com dedicated to our people's commitment to safety. Along with profiles of our people exemplifying what it means to be Always On, there are also leadership messages from each SBU President. Be sure to check out this page periodically as new content will be added on a routine basis.

Structuring the Brazil SBU for growth message from Andrés Gluski

Earlier this week, we announced an important milestone in our growth plans for the Brazil SBU - a restructuring of our companies in Brazil. Our presence in Brazil dates back to 1997. Currently, we are one of the largest private electricity operators in the country with 3.3 GW of generation assets and more than 8 million customers. Through a holding company called Brasiliana, AES holds stakes in AES Tietê, AES Uruguaiana and AES Eletropaulo. The Brazilian development bank, BNDES, is our partner in Brasiliana. AES also separately owns AES Sul outside of the Brasiliana structure.

Switch On and Stay On for Safety message from Bernerd Da Santos

Putting Safety First for our people, our contractors and the communities we serve is our number one Value because the industry we work in is dangerous. Today, on Global Safety Day, we recognize that safety has to come before everything we do because our people go to work each day and put their lives on the line. We dedicate one day to stop work for safety around the world, but it's up to each of us to dedicate ourselves to acting safely 365 days a year. Always doing things the right way, the safe way, is simply a really good habit. The more it is practiced, the easier it becomes. When you're Always On for Safety, you keep both eyes on the task and your mind on the task.

BEHIND THE MWs

AES signs deal to supply north Luzon

AES Masinloc, located in the Philippines and part of the Asia SBU, is set to launch a 600 MW expansion after winning the bid to supply 105 MW to eight electric cooperatives in the northern area of Luzon. Masinloc was the lowest bidder in the joint competitive selection process for the base load power requirements of member-distributors of the Region I Electric Cooperatives Association and the Cordillera Administrative Region Electric Cooperative Association (R1+CAR). Masinloc will help ensure a steady supply of power to provinces and local communities served by these cooperative groups. "AES Philippines is committed to providing the nation with safe, reliable and sustainable power," said Neeraj Bhat, AES Philippines Market Business Leader.

AES Eletropaulo's client satisfaction program celebrates two years of success

Two years ago, AES Eletropaulo, part of the Brazil SBU, created a program that promoted a culture of customer service and customer satisfaction. Jeito AES de Atender (or AES Way of Providing Customer Service) is now in its third year and has resulted in more than 13,000 people being trained to reinforce our customer-oriented approach. Thanks to the program's success at AES Eletropaulo, the program was launched at AES Sul last month. "Using the Golden Rules and consultative services as tools, we offer training to 1,005 of our people who work directly with customers," said Carlos Carriconde, Marketing Analyst at AES Sul.

COMMUNITY MATTERS

OPGC provides life jackets to local community

OPGC, located in India and part of the Asia SBU, provided 50 life jackets to the powerboat owners that ferry passengers daily from Tilia ghat near the OPGC power plant to Jamadarpali ghat on the Hirakud reservoir. Every day, hundreds of passengers travel on this route and the life jackets provided by OPGC will help ensure the safety of the passengers in the case of an accident. On the day that OPCG handed out the life jackets, the boat owners and passengers were also given safety training by the OPGC Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) team, led by Umakant Pahi, on the use of life jackets.

AES Panama provides drinking water supply to local community

Corporate social responsibility has been a part of the way we operate since our inception. One of our areas of focus for corporate social responsibility projects includes infrastructure development. A team at AES Panama, helped develop the local infrastructure by providing a drinking water supply for the residents of La Nicora, near AES Panama's Bayano plant. They did so by providing the materials needed to rehabilitate a nearby well. This project will benefit more than 375 people in this rural community. Meanwhile, Panama's Ministry of Health and local authorities are working with AES for the studies and design necessary for a water intake at a nearby source as part of the community's aqueduct expansion.
