Feature Story:

Capturing the distributed solar market

Company Confidential
Greetings!

Earlier this week, AES announced the acquisition of Main Street Power Company and their new name, AES Distributed Energy. Curious about what distributed energy is? Here are three things you need to know:

  1. Distributed energy resources are decentralized, modular and flexible resources, located close to the load they serve, typically 10 MW or less.
  2. Distributed energy, as an adjacency to our current platforms, creates a unique competitive advantage and scale of opportunity.
  3. Distributed energy complements our mission of improving lives with updated value chains designed to meet a growing trend toward consumer empowerment.

Welcome to our new people from AES Distributed Energy.

A Message from CEO Andrés Gluski: Capturing the distributed solar market

We are the energy. The safe, reliable and sustainable energy we generate and distribute improves people's lives. As we look ahead to 2015, we're at a critical juncture as we execute on our plans to position AES for the future. The energy industry is changing fast, driven by customer choice and the potential of disruptive technologies in the electric sector. One of our biggest risks is not moving fast enough to capture the opportunities created.

Monthly COO Safety Message from Bernerd Da Santos

We are making the world a safer place. Over the last 10 years, we reduced our fatality rates by 95% and our lost time incident (LTI) rate by 82%. We dramatically improved our LTI rates in 2014 alone by 21% for our people, 33% for our contractors and 45% for our construction contractors as compared to 2013. What do these numbers mean? They mean that more people are returning home safely at the end of each work day. They also mean that our goal to create an incident-free workplace for our 18,500 people around the world is within our reach. It's now up to each of us to deliver on that goal.

INNOVATION AT WORK

APEX project: Call Center Average Handle Time Reduction

At this year's 2014 APEX Global Awards, 15 projects were presented as examples of successful performance excellence projects across the company. One of the projects presented included, Call Center Average Handle Time Reduction, from AES Brazil. At AES Eletropaulo's call center, simpler client issues are frequently resolved by the interactive voice response (IVR) system and the new solutions website. Therefore, there has been a much higher concentration of complex issues handled by the call center resulting in an increased average handle time (AHT).

BEHIND THE MWs

AES Distributed Energy commissions 5 MW solar PV project in US Virgin Islands

Last week, AES Distributed Energy and the Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority (WAPA) hosted a dedication ceremony for a new 5 MW solar PV project on the island of St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands. The new facility will provide as much as 4-5% of St. Thomas's current base load capacity during daylight hours. Local labor and technical services were utilized extensively during the construction phase of the project, which was engineered and built by System 3 Inc. The 5 MW array has a nameplate capacity of 4.2 MW AC, and is expected to generate approximately 8.2 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually.

SPEED OF LIGHT

AES Argentina is moving at the Speed of Light

Last week, Bernerd Da Santos, AES COO and SVP, and Felipe Ceron, Andes SBU President, led a series of meetings at six AES Argentina locations to review Spark 15: Speed of Light. The primary purpose of the meeting was to identify ways to leverage the platform, partnerships and innovation to capitalize on growth opportunities in the market.

COMMUNITY MATTERS

Helping fourth graders Put Safety First

A team at AES Arlington put their words into action and taught 150 fourth graders about our first value, Put Safety First. As part of the AES Arlington Public Schools Outreach Program, modeled after other successful AES outreach programs, the team taught 150 students at Taylor Elementary School, in Arlington, VA, about electricity generation and safety. The students participated in a hands-on exercise to generate electricity. Students took turns using a hand-cranked generator to light led, fluorescent and traditional light bulbs. The more efficient the bulb, the easier the generator was to crank and produce enough electricity to light up the bulb.

AES Galabovo celebrates Baba Marta

As part of an annual tradition, AES Galabovo organized a local contest for most original Pizho-and-Penda adornment for one of Bulgaria's popular custom: Baba Marta. This corporate social responsibility program is aimed at preserving the Bulgarian cultural identity and developing the skills of the young people in the local community. Every year, children from the third to sixth grade of all schools within Galabovo Municipality take part in the contest. This year, students prepared a total of 24 Martenitsas.

#THROWBACKTHURSDAY

Powering the future

This week's #ThrowbackThursday picture shows the 75 years of progress at Dayton Power & Light's Tait Station from 1942 to today. On the right, is an image of a turbine being installed at Tait Station in 1942. On the left, is an image of the recent energy storage facility that was installed in 2013. From past to present, AES has consistently created innovative energy solutions to serve our customers' needs for yesterday, today and tomorrow.
