Company Confidential

Greetings!

AES reported its first quarter 2014 financial results earlier today with Adjusted Earnings Per Share decreasing by $0.03 as compared to the first quarter 2013. While we benefited from improved operating performance at several businesses in Europe, Central America and Brazil, we continued to face low hydrology in Panama and Brazil and experienced specific market challenges at DPL in the US and in the Philippines

AES selected as finalist for 2014 Edison Award

At AES, our mission is to improve lives by providing safe, reliable and sustainable energy solutions in every market we serve. Two of our businesses, AES Energy Storage  and one of our businesses in the Brazil Strategic Business Unit (SBU), AES Tietê, have been selected as finalists for the 2014 Edison Award by the Edison Electric Institute (EEI) for their distinguished leadership, innovation, and progress in advancing the electric power industry. The Edison Award is the electric industry's most prestigious honor. AES is the only company to be recognized with an International Edison Award four times in seven years. Our previous awards recognized the impact we had through operational improvements made in Latin America (2007) and the Philippines (2011), and the construction of the Angamos plant in Chile (2012) and the contributions we made to the electricity sector in Cameroon (2012).

PEOPLE MATTERS

Kyle Brumbaugh helps fellow runner cross finish line at Boston Marathon

AES has a global workforce comprised of individuals from diverse backgrounds, cultures and disciplines. Regardless of location or job function, all AES people are connected by our shared values; Put Safety First, Act with Integrity, Honor Commitments, Strive for Excellence, and Have Fun through Work. Through these values we challenge our people to live these values both on and off the job. Kyle Brumbaugh, an IT team member at our US Strategic Business Unit (SBU), did just that as he came to the aid of another runner while running the Boston Marathon in Massachusetts on April 21.

SAFETY FIRST

AES Safety Champions share best practices

Safety is our first value. Sharing knowledge and experiences related to this value allows AES People and contractors to apply lessons learned and to replicate best practices.

Every other month, the Global EHS Team hosts a Safety Champion Webinar. This is a virtual forum for the AES Safety Champions, operational, and EHS leaders to talk about a safety topic and share particular experiences related to that topic at the different AES locations. Typically, there is a guest speaker from one or more businesses, and after the presentation, the participants have an opportunity for open discussion.

TOOLS YOU CAN USE

May is National Electrical Safety Month

At AES we know the dangers of working with electrical equipment and the importance of always being safe.  May is National Electrical Safety Month, and it's a great time to raise awareness on how to avoid potential electrical hazards.

The Edison Electric Institue recommends these safety tips to avoid electrically related fires, fatalities, injuries, and property loss.

Indoors:

  • Check electric cords for fraying or cracking. Replace cords that may be damaged, and don't overload electric outlets.
  • Remember extension cords are intended to be temporary; they are not intended as permanent household wiring.
  • Don't run cords under carpets or rugs and don't tack or nail cords to walls or floors.
  • Keep electric appliances and tools away from water. Never reach for or unplug an appliance that has fallen into water; instead, turn the power off at the breaker before you unplug the appliance or remove it from the water.
