Greetings!

You may have heard about the Lean Six Sigma training some AES people have done and have wondered about the derivation of the term. Six sigma originated from terminology associated the maturity of a manufacturing process that can be described by a sigma rating indicating its yield or the percentage of defect-free products it creates. A six sigma process is one in which 99.99966 percent of the products manufactured are statistically expected to be free of defects. The Lean Six Sigma methodology incorporates lean manufacturing, which addresses process flow and waste issues. Now, read about how several AES people are improving their work skills with this kind of training in today's Spotlight Feature Story.

LEADERSHIP MATTERS
andres june 6 2013

As we work towards our mission of improving lives by providing safe, reliable and sustainable energy solutions in every market we serve, the AES Values guide the decisions we make and how we interact with each other, with business partners and suppliers, with customers, with investors, with the environment around us, and with the communities in which we do business.

We take the time on Values Day each year to recognize our five shared Values: putting safety first; acting with integrity; honoring commitments; striving for excellence; and having fun through work; and what they mean to us.

"Our Values * Our Energy" signifies that it's the energy our people bring to the work we do that enables us to achieve extraordinary results.

DP&L's Tait Station getting battery storage project

AES Energy Storage will be installing a multi-million dollar energy storage facility - the first in Ohio - at DP&L's Tait Station, located just south of Dayton, Ohio. This project is important for DPL and the Miami Valley because it brings cutting-edge technology to showcase the region. It also brings construction jobs to the Dayton area.

The Tait Energy Storage Project will provide frequency regulation to the PJM market, which controls the power grid for 60 million people in the U.S. Midwest and Northeast. Because the batteries can rapidly charge and discharge energy, it allows PJM to manage short term imbalances between the supply and demand of electricity.

It focuses on the reduction of errors and the optimization of current resources with data-driven decision making.  Many Fortune 500 businesses have adopted Lean Six Sigma as part of their management system for quality improvement.

FUELING QUALITY OF LIFE
IPL people recognize our Values with rewarding experience at neighborhood parks

Two weeks ago, nearly 300 Indianapolis Power & Light Company used 587 cubic yards of mulch, 245 tons of crushed stone, 57 gallons of paint and lots of labor and sweat on a hot, steamy day to refurbish eight city parks on the west side of Indianapolis as Part 1 of the company's annual IPL Day in the Parks.

Then, yesterday on AES Values Day, a different group of volunteers numbering nearly 50 traveled southeast of Indianapolis to refurbish another park in Martinsville, Ind., near its Eagle Valley Generation Station.

Pipeline vandalism in Nigeria affects AES Barge power output
