AES Spotlight
Greetings!

On February 27, 2013, AES reported our earnings for the Fourth Quarter and Full Year 2012. Adjusted Earnings Per Share (Adjusted EPS, a non-GAAP financial measure) were $1.24 for full year 2012. The contributions from our new businesses, which collectively represent more than 1,900 MW of capacity additions, and improved performance at our generation plants in the U.S. and Asia drove strong operating performance for the year. Reductions of general and administrative expenses also contributed to earnings growth. These positive drivers were partially offset by higher taxes and declines in Chile, due to lower spot margins and second quarter plant outages, and Brazil, as a result of the tariff reset at Eletropaulo

2012 APEX GLOBAL AWARD WINNERS

AES Performance Excellence (APEX) is at the very core of how we can improve the ways in which we work to deliver even more for our stakeholders and customers. In 2012, APEX teams completed more than 450 projects that delivered tens of millions in benefits to the company. The following three projects were recognized as our best projects for the year:

First Place

El Salvador: Total Maintenance Management System - A Cultural Transformation of Maintenance
The team created a maintenance management system by using innovative and low-cost tools and techniques to enable planning and prioritization of distributed assets as well as tracking performance following maintenance activities. The project led to reductions in both SAIFI and SAIDI, gaining savings associated with the Quality of Service and Non-Served Energy Penalizations.

SAFETY IS OUR WAY OF LIFE

Significant Safety Incidents

Each month, our Global Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) team creates a report containing summaries of significant safety incidents (as reported by AES businesses into the AESOnline System) and examples of unsafe actions or conditions for which AES people used their stop work authority. These brief reports include incident descriptions, initial causes and corrective actions undertaken locally.

Significant Safety Incident Reports are available in English, Spanish, Portuguese, French and Russian in DocuShare. They are learning tools that can help us send each and every AES person and contractor home from work in the same condition they arrived. There are 6-10 significant incidents in each monthly report. Although it is good to review all of them, we ask that each location review and discuss the incidents relevant to their risks and hazards.
