    California Redemption Centers Update

On January 31, the largest operator of California container redemption value (CRV) redemption centers, RePlanet, announced closure of 191 of its approximately 540 sites stating that a combination of factors had made these sites unsustainable: declines in commodities pricing, minimum wage increases, and required health and workers compensation insurance. California redemption sites receive some of their funding through state processing payments, the calculations for which are defined in state statute and include operating costs offset by scrap values. CalRecycle hosted meetings to discuss the fee calculations and cost survey on February 17. NAPCOR staff was in attendance to better understand the state's options around these calculations and will provide an update at the member meeting in April.
