    ASTM Update

At our July meeting we reported that NAPCOR is moving forward with ASTM process on Resin Identification Code (RIC) for PET. Dave Cornell has provided a draft for review. If you have input or comments on the draft, please submit to Chris Bradley by mid-September. Chris will integrate comments and present to the NAPCOR Board for review. The Board will then provide a PET RIC recommendation prior to the next ASTM meeting in Tampa, FL in November.
If you are a voting member and can attend ASTM meetings just prior to NAPCOR meetings in Greenville (11/15-17), we urge you to do so since D20.96 meetings will include a hand vote on negatives pertaining to the landfill degradability Guide. Please contact Kate if you join ASTM, to authorize your vote proxy if you can't attend the meetings in November, or with other questions.

Board nominations for elections in November

In November, NAPCOR membership will elect three board members in the following member categories: reclaimer, industry supplier and sheet/thermoformer. Anyone who is interested in nominating either themselves or a colleague should submit nominations to Byron Geiger or Charlie Schwarze, the Board's nominating committee. Nominations will also be accepted from the floor at the November NAPCOR meeting. Board terms are three years. More detail on the voting process will be provided prior to the November meetings.

Industry study on access to recycling

The Sustainable Packaging Coalition is leading an industry effort to evaluate general characteristics of recycling programs in the US, as well as specific access-to-recycling metrics for a wide range of materials. The study will be funded jointly by NAPCOR, ACC, SPI, the Foodservice Packaging Institute, the Can Manufacturers Institute, the Aluminum Association, the Recycling Partnership and the Closed Loop Fund. It will answer key questions like: How many households have access to curbside or drop off recycling? How many households have recycling access only if they pay for it? How many households have carts for curbside recycling (vs. bins)? What percentage of households has access to recycling for key material categories, including PET bottles, non-bottle PET packaging, and PET's competitor materials such as glass, aluminum and cartons?  The Study is expected to begin this fall, with a final report due in the Spring. Please contact Resa with questions or for more information on the Access study.
