PET Recycling Rate Report and Surveys
The rate report surveys are out! If you reclaim or convert PET, you should have received your survey as emailed by Allison Trulock of HDR. NAPCOR recently hosted two short webinars about the PET survey for those new to it, or those wanting a quick refresher on the intent of survey questions and some minor changes. If you missed these, but would like to run through the survey document, please click here to review the slides with a voice-over commentary (about 9 minutes long).

Please return your surveys to HDR no later than end June, and contact Kate with questions.

Bale Audit
CSD sort by clear, green, and other color.
The 2014 PET bale audit was performed in Sacramento, California from May 11-15. Contracted through Moore Recycling Associates, the audit crew included Kate Eagles of NAPCOR. Portions of 12 PET bales from representative collection methods and geographic locations throughout the United States were audited. Although completed in 2015 due to a change in audit location, the  material audited was predominantly from 2014 bales that we'd held for this purpose.
Close up on full-wrap

There are three additional California CRV bales to be audited this month, soon after which all data will be compiled and the bale characterization report for 2014 completed and made available to NAPCOR members. These audits provide a general sense of bale contents year-over-year; previous reports, containing detailed data appendix sections, are available from the NAPCOR Member Reports page (third bullet in "NAPCOR Member Only Reports & Documents" section).

The MRF Material Flow Study, sponsored by NAPCOR in partnership with the Carton Council, ACC, APR and FPI, is completed. The public report

provides a general overview of the project and outcomes. The plastics sponsor report is confidential to project partners and provides more depth on the study's look at how different plastic packages flow through the MRF. Both reports are available on the Member Reports page in the Members Only section of the NAPCOR website.

    Policy update

In Maine, LD 1204, which would have replaced the deposit on beverage containers 32 ounces and greater with a fee to fund recycling programs in the state, was voted down in committee last month. The Committee has asked the University of Maine, Orono's Mitchell Center to study the issue over the summer and recommend actions for next year.

California's AB 1447, which would have set minimum recycled content standards for PET food and beverage packaging, died in the Assembly's Appropriations Committee in May. Rumor has it the bill's proponents are already planning action for next year.
