JV Quiz Bowl State Tournament Results

On Saturday, March 15, the Hallsville Quiz Bowl team participated in the Missouri Academic Coaches Association (MACA) JV State Tournament. This tournament is hosted by the coach's association and is for sophomores and freshmen only.
Eighteen teams from across the state gathered at Rock Bridge High School for the tournament. At the end of the preliminary rounds, Hallsville was 4-1 and advanced to the championship rounds. At the end of championship play, the team finished in fifth place overall (large and small schools) but finished as the top placing small school. So they were crowned the Small School (Division II) JV State Champion. The team consisted of Brandon Hodges, Logan Durk, Tyler Babb and Joel Adams. Individually, Joel received a medal for finishing as the third leading scorer for the day.

Speech & Debate State Qualifiers
The MSHSAA district tournament was held last weekend at Mexico High School. In the group events, the Hallsville Speech & Debate Team came home with second place plaques in both Readers Theatre and One Act (Their first time competing in this event). Unfortunately, due to the size of our district, only the first place moves on to state, but we are still really proud of their performance and the positive comments they received from judges and other schools.
The team qualified to state in six events and had finalists in 9 out of 10 speaking events. Here are the results:
State Qualifiers
Tonia Bartlett - District Champion in Original Oratory
Makayla Crouch - District Champion in Dramatic Interpretation
McKena Hayden - District Chamption in Prose Reading
Makayla Crouch & Madison Crouch - 2nd Place in Duet Acting
Leah Hicks - 2nd Place in Poetry Reading
Tonia Bartlett - 2nd Place in Humorous Interpretation
Finalists
Derrek Trickel - 4th Place in Domestic Extemporaneous Speaking
Lee March - 5th Place in International Extemporaneous Speaking
Lauren Butrum - 5th Place in Storytelling

Spring Break
Hallsville R-IV Schools will be on spring break from March 24-28. Students will return to school on March 31. Have a wonderful spring break!

Karen Jimerson, Principal Thank you to all the families who attended parent-teacher conferences and the book fair last week. It is so important for us to share information and goals for our students, and your partnership is appreciated! This week, we will have fun with dress-up days for our Pennies for Patients collection.
- Monday - PJ Day "Dreaming of a day WITHOUT cancer!"
- Tuesday - Sports Day "Team up against cancer"
- Wednesday - Crazy clothes Day
- Thursday - Hat day "Hats off to those fighting cancer!"
- Friday - 1st grade, Preschool and Special Education wear white. Kindergarten, Office staff, Kitchen and Specialists wear red. This will help symbolize the red vs. white blood cells needing to be equal.
Also this week, the incoming 2014-15 kindergartners will visit us to complete the initial screening process. If you know a family with a child who will be eligible for kindergarten this year, please tell them about kindergarten screening.

 Stacy Fick, Principal
We had a wonderful parent-teacher conference turnout! The Book Fair, honor choir and dinner was a huge success! We look forward to our last quarter of making memories together and preparing ourselves academically for next year.
I'm sure that you have heard by now that your students met my reading challenge last week and were successful at reading 10, 434 minutes! This means I was duct taped to the wall on Monday. Oh Joy! I've had many funny questions like...."How do you eat? How do you itch? How do you 'discipline'?" Oh how funny!
