HHS Quiz Bowl Wins State Championship

The HHS Quiz Bowl team participated in the 2014 National Academic Quiz Tournaments (NAQT) Missouri Qualifier at MU on Saturday, March 1. There were 22 teams in attendance. Hallsville went 4-0 during the preliminary rounds beating Hickman, De Smet, Richland and Pilot Grove. The team entered the first round of the play-offs as the No. 1 seed. During the play-offs, they went 3-0 beating Helias, Thomas Jefferson (Joplin) and Helias B. The team then entered the final round of the play-offs undefeated and beat Savannah and Richland. They finished a perfect 9-0 for the day and was crowned the 2014 NAQT Overall Champion AND 2014 NAQT Small School Champion. It's very rare that a small school wins both titles.

Individually, Jared Lockwood was the leading scorer for the tournament and Josh Null was ranked sixth. The team's hard work and dedication surely paid off. Congratulations and good luck at the Nationals in Chicago!!

The HHS Student Council President for this year, Tonia Bartlett, has been a part of a wonderful program with the National Rural Electric Cooperatives of America (NRECA) as a Boone Electric Cooperative delegate. In June, she traveled to Washington DC with the Missouri delegation along with other students from all across the country. While on that trip, she interviewed and was chosen to be the Missouri spokesperson on the NRECA's Youth Leadership Council for a second trip to Washington DC. There they toured the NRECA national headquarters, did leadership focused workshops, and each presented a speech about what Youth Tour meant for them. The speech was an opportunity to be selected the national spokesperson for the NRECA's Youth Leadership Council. Tonia said "I did not end up being chosen as national spokesperson, but I worked so hard on my speech and had so much fun that I didn't even mind. " The past weekend, she traveled to Nashville for an extension of the Youth Leadership Council trip to the NRECA national convention. HHS is lucky and proud to have an outstanding student like Tonia represent our school on a national level.
