PRIDE Academy News
On Wednesday, October 30, PRIDE Academy students were gifted with yummy treats and a great visit from members of the Hallsville United Methodist Church. During the visit, members of the church learned about the academy and our various programs. We were also all entertained when one of our students, Nick Williford, broke out his guitar, played and sang to our visitors. The Methodist Church and its members have adopted PRIDE Academy as their Partner in Education for the 2013-2014 school year.

We had a great time at our Halloween parade and party! It was good to have so many family members here to celebrate with us. Thanks to all the parents who donated treats and organized games for the children to enjoy.

Veterans Day is only a week away, and we will be having our Veterans Day Assembly at 8:20 a.m. on Monday, November 11. If you have a veteran in your family who would like to join us for this event, please complete the flyer that was sent home last week and return it to the school. Also, if you have a family member who is currently serving our country, we would appreciate receiving an electronic greeting to include in a video that will be shown at our assembly. The greeting should include the soldier's name, current post location, branch and years of service, and the name of the Hallsville Primary relative. Please send the greeting via email to Mrs. Wang. Thanks in advance for helping to make this a meaningful event for our students.

Our fourth grade students celebrated Native American Day on October 31. Students have been celebrating this special event for many years. Coming to school in authentic costumes and enjoying a Native American feast in the afternoon were just a few ways the students were able to learn about Native American culture. Thanks to our parent volunteers and teachers who work tirelessly to make this event possible.
This week begins our November Character Education efforts for the word Gratitude. Helping our students to show thanks and appreciation for the work others do for them is a lifelong skill. Parents can assist at home by encouraging them to consider sacrifices made by others, e.g., fireman, teachers, waitress, mail carrier, hospital workers and carpenters, so that they may enjoy everyday conveniences.
Speaking of gratitude, please remember our Veteran's Day celebration on Monday, November 11 at 9:30 a.m. in the West Gym. All are invited to attend. If you haven't already sent us your veteran's name for recognition at the celebration, it's not too late.

Starting this week, the high school will be working on intruder drills during our advisory time. We will begin by having class meetings to talk about how we need to react in the event of an active shooter. Then, we will work on escape routes, running to safety, and establishing meeting places in the event of an evacuation. During these drills, we will also discuss what our plan will be when a fire alarm is activated during a time we are not in classes, such as lunch, an assembly or during passing times. Although we hope to never have to actually use these skills, it is important that we discuss safety and practice through drills so we can limit the amount of chaos in an actual event.
