HHS Quiz Bowl Team Advanced to State

On Saturday, October 19, the HHS Quiz Bowl team kicked off their season by competing in the Missouri Fall Academic Tournament at MU. There were 28 teams representing all regions of Missouri at the tournament.
Hallsville went 10-0 during the preliminary and play-off rounds with wins against Hickman, Rock Bridge, Parkway West, and Clayton along the way. They lost to Ladue, last year's National Champion, in the championship game. The team finished in second place in the tournament and also won the Top Small School Award.
Their second-place finish along with Top Small School qualifies them for the High School National Championship Tournament that will take place on May 30, 2014 in Chicago and also qualifies them for the Small School National Championship Tournament that will take place on May 3, 2014 in Minneapolis.
Individually, Jared Lockwood received an award for being the third leading scorer for the tournament.

Blood Drive on Oct. 22
The National Honor Society (NHS) is sponsoring a blood drive on October 22 in the high school cafeteria from 3-7 p.m. The blood drive is open to the public and the minimum age to donate is 16. All donors must show a photo ID at the blood drive. Sixteen-year-old donors also need a parental permission slip, which is available in the high school office as well. We are hoping to get as many people donating as possible, as there is always a need for this gift of life. The school will receive a scholarship that will be given to a senior if we hit our target number of donations. Any questions, please call the NHS sponsor Ms. Nancy Bagge at (573) 696-2281, ext.429.

Scholastic Fall Book Fair
The Scholastic Book Fair is coming soon! The book fair will be held in the Middle, Intermediate and Primary School Media Centers from October 21-25. It will be open for students to visit during the school day on October 21-23. Then, be sure to visit the book fair while at school for parent-teacher conferences on Thursday October 24 from 4-8 p.m. and on Friday, October 25 from 8 a.m. to noon. Not only does the book fair help promote reading, it also helps our schools purchase new items for our media centers. There will be contests to enter and prizes to win with each purchase. Come by and help support our schools!
If you can't make it into the book fair at school or just want to start your shopping early, check out the online book fair. All merchandise will be shipped to the schools for pick up and all sales will earn rewards for our schools.

Sole Tree
Many children in our Hallsville R-IV Schools desperately need shoes. Last year, 181 students received a new pair of tennis shoes through the "Sole Tree" program. It's amazing to see kids walking around with shoes that fit, no holes, clean and some of them for the first time in their lives.
This year, the program is back again. During parent-teacher conferences on October 24-25, there will be a holiday tree set up in each building with removable shoe ornaments that state the gender and shoe size of a child in need. Don't forget to grab a "shoe" off the trees! You can also email bwilliam@hallsville.org to receive an ornament for a child in need.
Monetary donations will also be accepted for the organization to fill any unfulfilled orders and stay in the Hallsville R-IV Schools. Please make checks out to "SGMWorldwide" or send donations to: 7571 North Fall Creek Drive, Columbia, MO 65202. You can also give the money to the building secretary or the school counselor and write "Sole Tree" on the envelope.

Karen Jimerson, Principal
Thank you to all who contributed to the Missouri Food Bank last week during our food collection at school. Our barrel was overflowing! We are fortunate to live in such a caring and supportive community.
The primary teachers are looking forward to seeing you at parent-teacher conferences this week. If you have not verified your scheduled time to meet with the teacher, please do so. The communication between teachers and parents is key to each child's success in school. Thank you in advance for being here.
You should have received a letter last Thursday about our Halloween party on October 31. Please note that only room parents who listed in the office by the teachers will be allowed to go to the classrooms before the parade. We are also asking that no one come to join us for lunch on this day. The children will be eating in their classrooms, and it will be a busy day!

Last week we participated in the Make a Difference Food Drive. Our students pulled together to collect over 550 items for donation. Our fifth grade students took the lead in this contest and will enjoy some extra recess time! Great work, kids!
Parent-Teacher Conferences are this week Thursday from 4-8 p.m. and Friday 8-11:30 a.m. We hope to see you all there!
This week we are also celebrating Red Ribbon Week, the campaign that reminds students why we stay drug free. Monday, students should wear red; Tuesday, wear their favorite team shirt and Wednesday will be spirit day.

No School on October 24-25.
Parent-Teacher Conference Times: October 24 from 4-8 p.m.
October 25 from 8-11:30 a.m. The fall conference will be a traditional parent-teacher conference. All teachers will be in their rooms and it will be first come first serve. We ask that you keep your conference as short as possible. If you need more time, feel free to schedule it for a later date. Our spring conference will be student-led and I will have more information on them as we get closer to the spring.

Parent/Student/Teacher Conferences
Parent/Student/Teacher Conferences are this week. The high school is looking forward to getting more parents and students to attend the conferences this year. With the busy schedules that come with having a high school student in your house, it can be challenging to keep caught up with all eight of their teachers. Please use this time to come in and find out about all of the great things that are happening in their classes. The teachers will be in their classrooms for visits during the following times:
Thursday, October 24 from 4-8 p.m. Friday, October 25 from 8-11:30 a.m. During the Thursday night conferences, we have a college fair in our hallways each year. We will have representatives from colleges, universities, tech schools, and the armed forces. This is a great opportunity for freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors to find out more about life after high school. Text Alerts Sign up for text alerts and reminders from the high school. It is quick and easy to do. The office will use it to send out reminders and changes to help keep parents and students up-to-date. Send a text message to (816) 527-9338 with @1b4ac3 in the message. You should get a reply back asking for your name. After you reply with that, you will get another text saying you have subscribed to Mr. Daly's Hallsville High School text alerts.
