Thanks to Your Donations
This summer, one of our second grade teachers, Ms. Kari Yeagy, submitted a request to DonorsChoose.org for MP3 players, headphones and headphone splitters for her classroom. Through various donations and matching gifts, she was able to create a listening center in her classroom for students to use during guided reading time. A listening center was important for the students because it allows them to hear fluent readers on a daily basis, as well as interact with books that might be a little challenging for them.
Her guided reading block is from 8:15-8:55 a.m. Monday through Thursday and there are always kids listening! She would like to give a big thank-you to all her donors. Also, DonorsChoose website is a convenient platform for teachers and parents to share and meet needs. Please contact Ms. Yeagy if you'd like to learn more about it.

We had a great turn out for the Pumpkin Fun Run at Phillips Lake in Columbia. Coach Anderson was very excited to see around 20 Hallsville students there to participate in the 1.5 mile run.

Midterm progress reports were sent home on Friday, September 20. Please review notes from your child's teacher and contact us if you have any questions or concerns. We enjoyed having the grandparents of our preschool students join their classes for cookies on Friday. The children were excited to have their special guests visiting our school!
We are looking forward to the Harlem Ambassadors game on Tuesday night! It is sure to be a fun evening! On Tuesday, October 8, the Primary staff will be enjoying dinner at McDonald's on Clark Lane for McTeacher Night. If you are planning to have dinner out that evening, join us from 4 - 8 p.m. McDonald's will donate a portion of the evening's proceeds to our school.

We named our Fifth Grade Character Ambassadors last week. We had nearly 40 fifth grade students apply to lead our school this year. The process to apply includes an application, an interview with the principal, reference and grade checks.
I was impressed at their passion to positively lead our school, gain leadership skills and, of course, have fun. I'm very excited to see these students exemplify outstanding character and be role models for the rest of the students in our school.
We had nearly 160 in attendance at our Parents Go Back to School Night. Our second grade class had the most parent representation with 40 students represented by their parents. They enjoyed ice cream during lunch on Friday.
A big thank you to the Boonslick Kiwanis Club for their annual donation of dictionaries to our third grade students. This has been a tradition for the past three years and we thank them for their generosity.

The seventh and eighth grade volleyball teams were both able to win their first ever matches, after starting the new program this year. Please be sure and tell them congratulations! Fiona Burke was our Friday drawing winner; she is the winner of a pizza party!! She received her ticket for excelling in the social studies classroom.
Special Events Next Week
- Tuesday: We will be having our Harlem Ambassadors assembly at 9 a.m. in the West Gym.
- Wednesday: During the eighth hour, we will have our character assembly and announce our students of the month. Maybe we can even get our Superintendent, Mr. John Robertson, to hand out those awards.

The mid-term of the first semester is about a month away. In the past, we have called this time "end of the first quarter" or "start of the second quarter," but we have made a shift away from that starting this year. The issue was students would end the first quarter with a certain grade and begin the second quarter with a fresh start. However, at the same time, the whole semester grade was an average of the two quarters and the semester grade is what counts on the transcript. So some students would fail the first quarter and have an A in October for second quarter, but in reality they were still failing the class. To make our grade tracking for academic support better, we have eliminated quarter grades. Instead, we will have a mid-semester progress check, and we will still produce a grade card during that time. By the way, those will be available for parent pick up at our Parent/Student Conferences in October. Student grades will continue with the same percentage after the mid-semester check and be cumulative until the end of the semester that ends at winter break. This will give us a better way to determine who is in serious need of our extra help before the semester ends.
