HHS Offering Two AP Classes
Hallsville High School is pleased to announce we now offer AP courses. Over the summer, Ms. Nipper and Mrs. Snelling attended an AP Summer Institute to see how they could incorporate AP into our school. Now for the first time in Hallsville, we offer AP Biology, taught by Mrs. Erin Snelling, as well as AP English Language and Composition, taught by Lydia Nipper. We want to thank these teachers for paving the AP way to our school!
For those that don't know what this means, AP stands for Advanced Placement. This is a national designation that will go on students' transcripts simply for taking the course. At the end of the year, students can choose to take an AP Exam and possibly receive college credit. This is a nationally recognized exam which all colleges / universities recognize. AP classes can be taken during a students' junior or senior year of high school.
Next year, we plan to offer even more classes as AP, as more teachers volunteer and want to go through the training. For more information on AP, please visit www.collegeboard.org.

We had a wonderful time at the Fall Festival which was held in the primary building on Saturday. We would like to thank all the families who came and especially those who worked to make this a great day for our students and families. Our PTO members do so much for our schools, and their contributions are always appreciated!
The Parents as Teachers program received a check for $750 from the Hallsville Optimist Club on Saturday at the club's weekly meeting. This donation will help cover the cost of affiliation fees for the 2013-14 year. We appreciate the generous support of the Optimist Club. Their dedication to our community provides many opportunities for the youth of Hallsville. Please mark your calendars for Tuesday, September 24 when the Optimist will host the Harlem Ambassadors in the west gym at 7 p.m. School staff will be playing as the home team during this fun event.

We are gearing up for another great week! We've been talking to kids about PRIDE and recognizing one another by giving Tomahawk Tokens. I'm amazed at the students' ability to celebrate each other's accomplishments.
Parents Go Back to School Night is Tuesday! It's a perfect opportunity to focus in the academic world your student is part of for 8 hours a day, 180 days per year! Come and have hot dogs, chips and let the kids play on the playground while you can focus on your meetings. The first 300 students and parents will be served.
Our students are getting excited about the upcoming Harlem Ambassador game next Tuesday night. This Friday, I'll be giving away 25 free tickets to the game during Fab Friday. If you still need tickets, contact the office for details.

Last week was a long hot week, but things went very well. The athletic teams and cheerleaders were all very active and that will continue this week. Fortunately, there will be a little reprieve from the heat this week as we continue our athletic season. Destinee Deener was the winner of our drawing last Friday. She will be the "Principal for the Day" this week. Destinee received her ticket for awesome problem solving skills in Ms. Berry's class.
In our drawing this week, we will be giving out a pizza party to the lucky winner. Be sure to encourage your student to go above and beyond in and out of the classroom so that they might receive a ticket and have a chance at being the winner. The MS softball game with Southern Boone has been rescheduled to Wednesday, September 18 at 5 p.m. in Hallsville. The following is the summary of next week's events. Let's go Indians!
- Tuesday at 5 p.m. - MS Softball at Moberly
- Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. - MS Football vs S. Boone
- Tuesday at 6 p.m. - MS Volleyball vs S. Boone
- Wednesday at 5 p.m. - MS Softball vs S. Boone
- Thursday at 5 p.m. - MS Softball at S. Callaway
- Thursday at 6 p.m. - MS Volleyball vs Kirksville

Academic Support starts this week on Tuesday. Students who have a 59% or lower in any class will be assigned to extra tutoring time. During our first lunch shift on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of each week will be devoted to working with those students who need extra support from the teachers. Once a student has raised his/her grade to a 67% or higher, they can get their appeal form signed by the teacher and be released from the program. Why 67% and not just a D- 60%? Because, we want to ensure there is some room so they don't slip right back to an F as easy. The sophomores, juniors and seniors with good grades will have open lunch on those days. They can eat lunch in the cafeteria or hallways during this time or they can take advantage of some free time in the gym, library and computer lab. This year, we have added a new feature for the open lunch time-an ACT prep room. Various teachers will take turns helping students with practice ACT questions. This is a great FREE tutoring offered by our faculty that you should encourage your student to take part in if they are not assigned to Academic Support. The teachers will rotate through different subjects like reading, math, English and science. What a great opportunity for our students!
