Preparing for the MAP
MAP testing is coming up fast. The MAP (Missouri Assessment Program) assesses students grades 3 through 8 in the core subjects of Communication Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies. Each test is slightly different as some are timed while others give students as much time as they need. For more information about MAP testing specifics, please visit the Missouri Department of Elementary and Education website.

Even though there is no way to "cram" for the MAP test, there are several things that you can do to help your child to be prepared during the testing period.
  • Get plenty of rest - A tired brain will have trouble focusing on what is being asked on the test. By getting plenty of sleep during the week of the MAP test, students will be fresh and ready to tackle the test.
  • Eat a good breakfast - Research shows that if a student is hungry, he or she may have trouble focusing. Even a small breakfast is better than no breakfast. The school's will be providing breakfast to all students during testing. Students can still eat at home, then use the brown bag breakfast as a snack later in the day.
  • Be on time to school - Arriving late to school makes children feel rushed and can be disruptive to the rest of the class.
  • Try to avoid scheduling appointments - If it is possible to schedule doctor, dentist, etc. appointments after the testing period, then your child will not have to take the MAP as a make-up test individually or in small groups.
  • Maintain a positive attitude toward the test - Even if you do not agree with the test, be positive and upbeat about the test and how your child will do on it.

If you have questions, please contact your building principal.

It is time for benchmark testing at the primary. These important assessments help us measure each child's progress for the year, and data for each grade level gives us information about changes we need to consider for future instruction. We will begin with kindergarten testing this week.

Mid-term progress reports will be sent home on Friday. Please contact your child's teacher if you have questions or concerns regarding the report. The teachers value your support and welcome the opportunity to discuss your child's experiences at school.

We hope many kindergarten students will have guests for breakfast on Friday, April 26. If you haven't made your reservation, please let us know if you plan to attend Pastries with Parents.

It was wonderful to have many guests in the primary building on April 16 for the first grade Pastries with Parents! Thanks to all who were here. You might have noticed that the young trees on the grounds around the primary building have been freshly mulched. We extend our thanks to John and Laura Kabrick for donating their time and resources to help take care of our school.

Some dates to remember:

April 26 - Kindergarten Pastries with Parents (7:45 a.m.)
May 3 - First Grade Pizza in the Park
May 7 - PAT Big Truck Night
May 10 - No School
May 16 - Primary Fun Run
May 21 - Primary Celebration (5-7 p.m.)
May 24 - Last day of school

As we close our Character Word of the Month, Sensitivity, students will get a chance to hear from two individuals with disabilities during Fab Friday this week. Their message will be to help students better understand disabilities and how to be sensitive to those with special needs.

Congratulations to the 4th and 5th Grade Honor Choir students who had a successful trip to Worlds of Fun last Saturday, performing for the guests in attendance. Their performance showcased their skills and talents!

Stress levels usually increase as the school year draws to a close. Parents may notice a change in behavior in their student, teachers and students are both stressed about end of course (EOC) exams, and guidance counselors are dealing with regular daily activities while trying to work out last minute graduation and scholarships issues.   It seems there is too much to do and not enough time for  to get things done.

From school, homework, job, friends, sports, and family activities, things can get pretty stressful. I have listened to students who feel they don't measure up to others, those who have described their family life as stressful, and others who wonder how they can change. These problems are real for our students and they are finding out you can't turn off "real life" in the middle of school. For most of the adults, we have been through experiences like this and have learned to handle the daily grind and go on...we get knocked down and get back up. Spend time with your student during these stressful times and provide encouragement, feedback, and a sense a calm as they get closer to adulthood and the new challenges they will be facing.
