FFA Petting Zoo
Last Friday, the Hallsville High School chapter of the FFA sponsored a petting zoo in the shop of the agriculture classroom. Local day care providers, the primary school, the intermediate, and middle schools students came through the zoo. Students were able to touch the animals, ask questions, and were offered coloring sheets.  Each animal exhibit had a poster made by FFA students with information and pictures.  Click here to view pictures from the event.  Watch our YouTube channel for a story on the event in the coming week.
Special Olympics Meet
A small group representing Hallsville last Saturday at the Central Area Spring Games (track and field meet) at Rockbridge High School.  The weather was great and the team had a lot of fun as our Hallsville Olympians competed their way to silver and gold medals.  Better than all the medals, though, were all the smiles along the way.  These kids had a great time at working hard. Coach Williams stated, "I'm so proud of all they've accomplished.  Please congratulate them when you see them."

Austin Sobba:
T-Ball Throw - Gold
400m Run - Gold

Tim Denson:
25m Motorized Wheelchair Obstacle Course - Gold
50m Motorized Wheelchair Slalom - Gold
Softball Throw - Silver

Charlie Thompson:
Turbo Javelin - Silver

Bond Update
We have added a page to our web site. This addition is to keep you informed as we move forward after April's election and passing of Proposition One. As updates are available, we will post them to our Facebook page and to the school website. We are excited about the opportunity to serve the students in our community through these facility upgrades. The first posting is a letter from Connell Architecture, P.C. listing milestones and goals. It also establishes a tentative timeline of projects. Click here to visit the webpage.
Summer School Registration Open
Summer school will be June 3rd through June 28th. The registration packets are available at each building office or you can click here to download the appropriate form. The forms can be printed or filled out online and submitted via email.  For more information, call Mr. Brad Blakemore at (573) 696-5512 Ext. 322.
Quiz Bowl Team District Champions
On Saturday, Hallsville hosted the MSHSAA Class 3 District 7 Academic Bowl tournament.  At the end of the preliminary rounds, Hallsville was the #1 seed for the semi-finals followed by Montgomery County, Centralia, and Southern Boone County in that order.  In the semi-finals, Southern Boone County decided to forfeit and go home early (Hallsville advanced to the finals) and Montgomery County beat Centralia to advance to the finals. In the finals, Hallsville beat Montgomery County 510-180.  This group of seniors have now won back-to-back District Championships and will advance on to the Sectional Round of the State Championship Series on April 24th.
School Dress Code Reminder

The weather is finally getting warmer! As a result, we want to offer a friendly reminder of our dress code policies as outlined in each building's student handbook. This document can be found at our webpage, www.hallsville.org, and then choosing the appropriate school building. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

High School News
Bob Plourde
Bob Plourde, Principal
Earlier this year, our administrative team participated in a book study entitled, "Inevitable." I found it very interesting and it has influenced my mind-set on future changes that will take place in the educational world. One of the first themes of the book is, "The world is changing...no, excuse us, it's not changing - it already has changed!" I find that statement to be very true. As I observe the students of Hallsville and watch the tasks that our teachers are giving them, I reflect on the education I received. Research that would have taken me weeks to gather, students today can gather in minutes. The textbook is becoming obsolete. The class we looked forward to was 'typing' and using the manual typewriter was "groovy."  The accomplished typing students were allowed to use one of the electric type writers (my best time was 19 words per minute) as advanced learning. Now I look at the Intermediate students and their computer skills - wow. Their computer skills are more advanced that many of us experienced during high school.

It makes me think that if our public schools do not change how we do business, we will not prepare our students for the future. Technology is transforming our lives in so many aspects. The question many schools are asking is do we encourage use of technology or not?  It amazes me how many schools do not allow students to use technology. Technology is not going to disappear. Technology also changes so quickly that it can be difficult to keep up. We must teach our students how to use technology and how to use it responsibly. The job of the school is constantly evolving. We now have several new ways to customize and personalize learning to the individual student. We must stop looking at "seat time" and start looking at what a student has learned and how that student can demonstrate they have learned in multiple venues. This is a challenge for the educational system since it is relatively new and keeping up with new technology is also expensive.
