 Proposition One Information
Tuesday, April 2, 2013, the Hallsville R-IV Schools are proposing a bond on the election ballot. Based on community input, the original bond amount has been reduced and priorities shifted to address student safety and the imminent needs of the oldest building on our campus. Proposition 1 is a comprehensive facility plan focused on the students, the safety and the success of our school district in the years to come. This proposition is based on a number of factors that were presented to the board through public meetings that focused on delivering a plan that the patrons of the district would approve.
Proposition 1 includes a variety of building safety improvements throughout the district. These safety improvements are being put in place to help prevent a tragic event like the ones we have seen in the recent past.
Proposition 1 also includes two capital improvement projects being put in place to replace the district's oldest building. This building currently houses the biology & chemistry classrooms & labs, the health and physical fitness classroom, and central office. This building does not provide the proper learning environment for our students. The science classrooms are outdated and too small for the class sizes in the district. Additionally, this building is not ADA compliant (obtaining ADA compliance is not possible under the building's existing conditions). The roof is currently in very poor condition, and it will require major repairs that are not cost effective. Though it is possible to repair the roof, we must look at the prudence of a costly repair on a building that is structurally and academically outdated. The second improvement will be a health and fitness addition that will be built adjacent to the west gym. Currently, the health/fitness classroom is located in the same building as the current science rooms. The removal of this building will eliminate this classroom. Due to the current condition of the roof, more than 150 students who are in this classroom on a daily basis are doing their classroom activities around buckets catching water dripping from the roof anytime it rains or the snow starts melting off. This class is a a vital part of the health and fitness curriculum at Hallsville R-IV. It is not just a class for athletes as many of the students enrolled in this class are not even involved in extra curricular activities. How it affects you: Depending on the value of your home, the proposed increase would amount to approximately the following:
Home Value Inc/Year Inc/Month $100,000 $ 9.50 $0.79 $150,000 $14.25 $1.19 $200,000 $19.00 $1.58 For more details, you can visit the website, www.prop1.weebly.com or call John Robertson at 696-5512, Ext 301. |

Bookmobile Visits Campus
The Daniel Boone Regional Library's bookmobile visited the Primary and Intermediate buildings today as the title one program sponsored "Reading Week." To kick off the event, students in the buildings dressed up as their favorite book character. Other events during the week include special guest readers in the classroom, story time at lunch, and the return of the bookmobile on Friday. Take some time to read a book with your student this week as part of your family time. What is your favorite book to read with your student? Tell us in our online poll by clicking here. We will publish the results in our next eNewsletter.

 Pennies for Patients Update
The week off from the snow days put a bit of a crunch on the amount of money raised by students at the Hallsville Primary. The students raised just over $1,800 - just shy of their goal of $2,100. Students can still bring in funds until April 1st. As part of their hard work, Principal Karen Jimerson promised to "kiss a lamb" to encourage students to participate. Freckles the clown brought "Chester," to school this morning for Mrs. Jimerson to kiss. To the delight of all, Mrs. Jimerson made true on her promise and kissed the lamb. Another objective is to create awareness by educating parents and families and bring them up to speed on opportunities in engineering for their child.
The day consists of exposing female middle school students to the fun and excitement of engineering and computer technology through hands-on activities with our Society of Women's Engineers members and current female faculty members, lunch with current female students, special alumni speakers and guests and conclude with Mizzou Rec Center activities and a field trip to the campus bookstore.
The event is Saturday, April 20th from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM and is open to girls in the 6th through 9th grades. There is no registration fee, but the event is limited to the first 30 who sign up. Deadline is April 1st. Click here to register. |

Saturday, March 9, 2013, Strength Coach Jason Clark took 26 athletes to South Callaway school district for an annual "power meet." With 12 schools and 330 athletes in attendance, our students performed and represented Hallsville well. Many personal records were attained. The district had six first place finishers, eight second place finishers, and eight third place finishers. The boy's team finished 4th and the girl's team (with only 5 members) finished 2nd place and brought home a nice trophy. Congratulations to all of the students who worked hard on this endeavor! Do you know a child who will be eligible to attend kindergarten next year? Please help us spread the word about our spring registration and screening. Over sixty families came to our advertised registration event last week. It is important for us to register as many kindergartners as possible this spring to insure that we are ready for our new students in August. If you or a friend has a child who will be five years old on or before July 31, 2013, please give us a call at (573)696-5512 extension 334.
We had wonderful attendance at our parent/teacher conferences! Thank you to everyone who came to visit with the teachers and to shop at our book fair. We hope that spring break, March 25 - 29, gives you many opportunities to enjoy some time with family and friends.
The Parents as Teachers Program is hosting a presentation for the parents of children who will be starting kindergarten in the fall. Three of our kindergarten teachers will share information and answer questions about this critical first year in a child's academic career.Kindergarten Kick-Off (Hosted by Parents as Teachers)

Last week I talked about the High School moving to more of a Cum Laude style of student recognition. I was glad that several parents contacted me for more information. At this point, it is merely to encourage a change of mind-set of Grade Point Average vs. rigorous courses taken during a student's high school career. Most colleges/universities are looking closer at the actual academic classes a student takes (AP and Dual) in addition to their ACT/SAT test scores.
What we have experienced recently are students wanting to drop one of our AP classes due to the fact they are not getting an 'A' grade. Parents often support this because they do not want to see their student's class ranking drop due to a more challenging class. In fact, this Dual Credit or AP course may actually benefit a student more than a high grade in a more traditional course. Increasingly, many seniors are taking easier classes so their last year isn't as challenging. By contrast, this is probably the most important time of their educational career for those who are planning on pursuing higher education. We need to change the mind-set of the school, student, and home, encouraging them to take more rigorous classes. This will benefit them in the long run as colleges and universities are beginning to take a closer look at the types of classes taken.
