 Speech/Debate Ends Season Strong
This weekend, the Hallsville speech and debate team competed at the national qualifying tournament at Pattonville High School. Friday, twelve students competed in up to four rounds of double elimination competition against students from the eastern side of the state. After a good four hours of sleep, seven of our students made the return trip Saturday. By Saturday afternoon, three were competing in the final qualifying round, against many students who have been doing this activity for multiple years. In awards, the entire student body and coaches gave this "rural school district from the middle of the state" (the event director's words) a standing ovation as our students were recognized for having competed and qualified their first national qualifier: Terry Deweese in dramatic interpretation! He has earned a spot to compete at the national tournament in Birmingham, Alabama in June. Tonia Bartlett, and Tony Deweese (with Terry) were also in finals and are 3rd alternates in their respective events. Please congratulate our students on a great season, below are all the students who competed in districts:
Terry Deweese, 3rd place Dramatic Interpretation, National Qualifier
Tonia Bartlett, 5th place Humorous Interpretation, (3rd alternate to Nationals)
Terry and Tony Deweese, 5th place Duo Interpretation, (3rd alternate to Nationals)
Hailey Ragan and Kaitlyn Gebhardt, Duo Interpretation, semi-finalists
Makayla and Madison Crouch, Duo Interpretation, semi-finalists
Peyton Bowman and McKena Hayden, Duo Interpretation
Andrea Riley, Original Oratory
Mollie O'Day, Dramatic Interpretation
Lauren Butrum,

Congratulations are also due to our speech/debate team coach, Mrs. Staci Johnson. Congratulations on such a successful year!

Hallsville Bus Fleet Attains 100% Rating
The Missouri State Highway Patrol annual inspection of the buses was completed on Thursday, March 7, and all 21 district buses passed. There are over 300 inspected items per bus. This is the second straight year the fleet has been 100% approved, and the ninth time in the past ten years that the District has scored 90% or better. The drivers made extra efforts to keep their buses ready for the inspection, and several were present prior to the inspection to assist with the final preparation, and during the inspection to help as needed. Thanks to Brenda West, Joe Gini, Dale Hughes, Tina King, Laura Reddick and Brandy Melloway for the help on inspection day! A big thank you goes to Forrest Cunningham for the daily maintenance and repairs, and the thorough checks before inspection that allowed for this achievement to be obtained. Congratulations to all involved! |

Hallsville Kids Club Wrestling News
Hallsville Kids Club wrestling team had great success recently at the Missouri AAU State Championship tournament in St. Louis. All three wrestlers that competed were medal winners. Hunter Tessman earned Hallsville's first ever wrestling state championship taking first in the 135 pound Cadet division. Brandon Borlinghaus won a hard fought 4th place against some tough competition in the 70 pound School Boy division. Parker Crane placed 6th in the 45 pound Bantam division losing by only 1 point in 2 of his matches. It was a tough tournament and a great showing for Hallsville wrestling on a state wide stage. |

Student Led Conferences are this Thursday and Friday! Hear from your child about their own learning goals this year! Also, Thursday evening you can enjoy a lasagna dinner sponsored by PTO. Dinner tickets can be purchased through the office at a low cost for kids and adults. The dinner takes place in the Intermediate Commons, Thursday evening from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Click here for the reservation form you can send in to the school with your child.
Our new word of the month is Responsibility! We will definitely have lots of students who exemplify what it means to be responsible! Today also
marks the beginning of 4th Quarter!
Two final notes: first, be sure to ask your child about the visit from Captain Underpants at our last Spirit Assembly! We had lots and lots of laughs about his visit! Second, we are now going to put online the forms you find in your child's backpack at the end of each week. To see this "virtual backpack," go to the Intermediate webpage and find the link in the "Popular Links" section. You can also click here to see it directly. We hope you will find this new feature helpful.

 Bob Plourde, Principal
In our High School Leadership Team meeting, an interesting article was discussed about the valedictorian and how they are selected. It was pointed out that the origins of a 'Valedictorian' had absolutely nothing to do with achievement at all; it is a Latin term that means "to say farewell.' It is the person who has been selected to make a farewell address at the commencement ceremony. If you have attended a university or college commencement, you will notice their Latin criterion-base system to identify and honor high-achieving students with Cum Laude (with honor), Magna Cum Laude (with great honor), and Summa Cum Laude (with highest honor). The article suggested than when reviewing admission applications and making decisions about scholarships, colleges and universities today are far more interested in the rigor of the curriculum students have experienced. The also review the number of Advanced Placement (AP) courses taken, the highest level of math studied, and the total number of courses completed. The University of Duke rejected 58% of valedictorians who applied, the University of Pennsylvania rejected 62% of valedictorians, and 91% of the valedictorians who applied at Harvard were rejected (including 1 in 4 applicants with perfect SAT scores). At Hallsville, we will be looking at increasing the number of students who are taking and meeting the rigorous criteria and high standards we want to set. We need the help of the homes and community in this effort. I can say that one of the most frustrating issues I have dealt with over the years, is when the selection of the valedictorian has turned into a bitter competition between students, and often parents getting in the mix. Why should we just have one? Shouldn't we want the largest amount of Hallsville students with the highest achievement? If you have suggestions or comments, I welcome them - please contact me at 573-696-5512.
We hope to see you this Thursday and Friday for our spring Parent/Teacher conferences.
