 Pennies for Patients
Hallsville Primary students (preschool through 1st grade) are participating in the "Pennies for Patients" program though the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS). The LLS is the world's largest voluntary health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research and provided education and patient services.
From February 11th to March 11th, students will be bringing in coins to meet their fundraising goals. This year, students hope to raise $2,100. Last year, students raised $2,054, which exceeded their goal.
The kick off assembly took place this morning. Students and parents learned how blood cancer can affect people. Mrs. Leigh Pemberton, a kindergarten teacher at the Primary Building, also spoke about her experience and survival of blood cancer.
The final week of the fundraiser will include special dress up days, classroom activities, and a final assembly on March 11th to celebrate their efforts. Mrs. Pemberton shares the microphone as students talk about the fundraiser.

Mrs. Johnson honored as a "Diamond" Coach from National Forensic League
The National Forensic League, the speech and debate honor society, is proud to announce Mrs. Staci Johnson as its newest diamond coach. Mrs. Johnson received a first diamond award after earning 5,782 points on January 17, 2013. A diamond award recognizes a professional career that combines excellence and longevity. The League provides diamond awards based on coach points received. Coaches receive one-tenth the points earned by their students and one-tenth of the points earned as a student member of the League. After a minimum of five years as a League member, a coach who attains 1,500 points is awarded a first diamond; he or she receives a second diamond for 3,000 points, a third for 6,000 points, and so on. Five years must pass between each diamond award. On June 20, 2013, Johnson will receive special recognition at the Lincoln Financial Group/National Forensic League National Speech & Debate Tournament in Birmingham, Alabama. Each year, the tournament draws more than 5,000 students, coaches, and parents from across the nation. You can send Mrs. Johnson a congratulatory email here. |
