Students Participate in Zero Hour
Increasing speed and agility for any sport is the goal of "Zero Hour," a program started in January by Mr. Devin Johnson and assisted by Mr. Jason Clark. The program is open to any student in grades six through twelve. The program is offered Monday through Thursday from 7:00 to 7:40 AM, usually in the north gym. On average. 30 or more students participate each morning. The primary drills are designed to work on agility and teach proper form when running. In addition to the zero hour, Johnson and Clark help supervise a weight lifting program open to all middle and high school athletes after school. On average, twenty or more students participate in this program. For more pictures of zero hour, visit our album on our Facebook page. The program will run all semester until end of course exams begin.

Students stretch out after a morning workout ends.

Reaching the Century Mark
There is something special about the number 100. It is a milestone for many things, and the 100th day of school is no different. On Wednesday, January 30th, we will have been in school for 100 days and the Primary Building is getting ready with projects and activities. Kindergarten students have been putting together projects with 100 items in them and are displayed in the library. Students and staff will be dressing as if they were 100 years old, they will dance for 100 seconds, read for 100 seconds, and do more activities that center around the number 100. Watch for pictures on our Facebook page and in next weeks eNews from this exciting event. Primary students look with excitement at posters on display in the Primary library.

Senior Parent Information
We are in the process of putting together a DVD project for the 2013 Senior class. In this project we would like to have every senior represented.
Mrs. Susan German will produce the DVD. To complete the project, she will need three pictures of your student. Please send one picture before kindergarten and the other two can be any other age.
Susan would prefer the pictures be scanned, placed in a power point and then e-mailed to her at sgerman@hallsville.org. If you don't have power point, scanning the pictures and sending as a .jpg or other picture format will work. If you don't have a scanner, you can bring or send in pictures to Terri Adkins.
FEBRUARY 4th is the deadline to receive all pictures!
Our desire is to have each student represented. The video will show at their party and we don't want anyone to be left out. Please send your pictures! The Senior All Night Party Committee will give each senior a copy as a gift at the conclusion of the all night party. On that note, please help us plan the 2013 Senior All Night Party.
Monthly meetings are at 6 PM in Terri Adkin's Room. The dates for the meetings are:
- February 17
- March 17
- April 21
- May 5
All parents are welcome and we appreciate your input. For more information, contact Joni Griffin at 696-2911 or griff5000@aol.com.

Stacy Fick, Principal The Intermediate is participating in a TIME for KIDS Magazine Drive. Here's how it works: Your child will bring home packet. If he/she returns the packet completed with addresses, he/she will get a small prize and for every 30 returned, our school gets 50 Time for Kids subscriptions!
We really need your help with this! We spend nearly $1000 each year on this subscription and by having the kids simply return their address packet completed, you'll be helping us to save lots of money! There's no purchase necessary, but if you choose to also purchase a magazine of your choosing from the packet, we earn even MORE money! Thanks for your help!
This Friday is MID THIRD QUARTER! Expect progress reports next week!
Good luck to our fourth grade students who have been randomly selected to participate in the NAEP, a national test that sets the standards for the rest of the states in the country. They will take the test on Wednesday!

Clinton Hague, Principal Submitted by: Rhonda Haes, Quiz Bowl Sponsor. Saturday morning at 6:45 13 students boarded the bus for the Tuscumbia MS Quiz Bowl Tournament. After a long and brain draining day of 7 competitions and over 500 questions, we returned with a few wins under our belt. Teams were divided with a mixture of both 7th and 8th graders.
Team captains for the day were Sarah Hedrick and Drew Pickett. These two individuals did an amazing job of keeping track of their team members and competition rooms. They made sure someone who was not playing kept score and tallied individual points. A big thank you for their leadership that day.
Drew's team consisted of Clarence Morris, Ryan Blumer, Drayton Bates, Robyn Frederic, Christopher McMichael and Chandler Green. They played teams from Washington, Holden, Osage, Boonville, St James and Tuscumbia. High scorers for this team were Drew, Ryan, Clarence and Drayton.
Sarah's team included Brandon Hodges, Cole Hanvey, Alex Mikel, Logan Durk, and Tylor Phillippe. They played teams from Washington, Boonville, Tuscumbia, Holden, South Callaway and Higbee. High scorers for this team were Brandon Hodges, Cole Hanvey Logan Durk and Sarah Hedrick. They won three of their games against Holden, South Callaway and Washington, and one of the losses was by a 1/2 point power bonus question. Cole played the Captain's chair most of the day.
When you have a chance, congratulate them on a good showing. We are off this week, but resume on Feb 7th against South Callaway.

This week, I want to address the Academic Support/Privilege Program you might have heard your student talk about. This program is designed to provide tutoring to those who need it, and allows students who are doing what is expected, a chance to experience a bit of freedom with responsible behavior.
Every three weeks, we have a grade check which determines if a student will need academic support or if they retain their privileges. Any student with a failing grade or whose teacher feels the student has not shown mastery of an essential learning outcome will be assigned to a tutoring center for the first 25 minutes of the lunch period. After tutoring, students go lunch as usual. Once the student's grade is 67% or higher, the expanded privileges are restored. Privileges include eating lunch in places other than the cafeteria, free time in the halls, gyms, computer labs, or in teacher classrooms. This program allows us to create a culture at Hallsville where failure is just not an option and success earns privileges.
This program has had an effect upon our staff. It causes us to look at the real reasons why a student grades might be struggling. The majority of the students who struggle have an issue with turning in work; others have issues with obtaining a key concept. As a staff, we are focusing on not accepting a 'zero' for work. Life doesn't work this way. If one doesn't turn in taxes on time, the government doesn't give us a zero. It still requires us to complete the task and assesses a penalty.
With the importance of education in our society today, we can not allow students to fail. This doesn't mean that we make classes easier. We have to shift the focus on the causes of failure and working through options. We can't give up on society, and we certainly can't give up on our kids. |

Guidance Corner
Early enrollment is already in full force at the high school. For the past two weeks, high school counselors have been meeting with sophomores and juniors to select classes for next year, as well as enroll in the Career Center. Next will be the current 8th and 9th grade students. Now is the perfect opportunity to have a conversation about future career goals and how you, as a family, are going to help make their dreams to become a reality. Think ahead and plan trips to visit college or technical school campuses. It's never too early to plan life after high school!

Community Wrestling
submitted by: Ronald Tessman
January 18-19th, Parker Crane, Gavynn Carpenter, and Luke West traveled to Tulsa, Oklahoma for the 58th annual CF Athletic Tulsa Nationals as part of the Hallsville Wrestling Club.
Parker Crane wrestled very well, completing some crucial take downs to place 3rd! Parker stayed in good position at all times, whether on his feet or from the bottom.
Gavynn Carpenter was dominant in both of his matches. Unfortunately in both matches he made a small mistake and did not place. It has happened to all us at one time or another and this provides Gavynn a chance to learn and move forward.
Luke West was dominant against all of his opponents except one, losing in the semifinals in overtime by controversial take down. That should have been the championship match as his semi opponent dominated everyone else they wrestled including in the finals. Luke bounced back and crushed his opponents to take 3rd!
Luke West (l) and Parker Crane (r) stand with their 3rd place trophies.
