School Board Proposes Bond Issue

The Hallsville R-IV School Board passed the proposal of a $2 million bond issue at the January meeting. This proposal will appear on the April 2013 election ballot and reflects direct input from district patrons. The proposal would increase the current debt service levy by five cents. Currently, the tax assessment is $1.06 per each $100 of assessed evaluation. The proposed bond would increase that level to $1.11. The proposed bond would allow the removal of the current science, health/fitness, and central office building that is not ADA compliant and is in need of significant roof repair. New construction would provide three new science classrooms, two new science labs, a new health/fitness classroom, and the relocation of central office to an area within existing district facilities. Also included in the bond proposal are significant improvements to the security of the campus. Security improvements would include installing security cameras, improved and new intercom and communication systems, and improvements to the security of existing building entrances.  For more information, you may contact Mr. John Robertson, Superintendent.
Blakemore Honored for 300th Victory

During halftime of Friday's varsity basketball game, George Rudisaile, Facilities and Transportation Director, presented Hallsville Athletic Director and Head Girls Basketball Coach, Brad Blakemore, with a trophy to honor a milestone in his coaching career.  On January 5, 2013, the win over Community R-6 at the Madison Tournament was Coach Blakemore's 300th win.

During the presentation, Blakemore was joined by his wife Sally and their children Brayden, Lauren, and Meredith, past and present assistant coaches, as well as current and past players of the Lady Indians team coached by Coach Blakemore.

With four conference championships, two district championships, and back-to-back third place finishes at State, Coach Blakemore has led the way in building a rich tradition of competitive basketball for our Hallsville girls. Since Saturday's win, there have been two more victories added to the total bringing the overall record to 302-166.

Coach Brad Blakemore receives a trophy commemorating his 300th win from Facilities/Transportation Director George Rudisaile.
2013 Courtwarming King & Queen

Last week was a busy one at the Hallsville High School as students participated in the annual Courtwarming activities. The theme this year was "Back to the Future." Students participated in skits, a penny drive, themed dress up days, banners, all leading up to the crowning of the 2013 Courtwarming King and Queen.  The boys junior varsity and varsity basketball teams defeated the Indians from School of the Osage. A dance concluded the week's events after the basketball games that evening. Pictures from the week can be viewed on our Facebook page by clicking here. Overall class winners from the week:  Seniors - 1st place, Sophomores - 2nd place, Juniors - 3rd place, Freshmen - 4th place.
2013 Courtwarming King and Queen Zach Borland and Michelle Gall were crowned at the end of Friday's basketball game.

Hallsville Masonic Lodge #336 Donates Bicycles

Students at the Intermediate school had the chance to win a new bicycle by reading books. The "Books for Bikes" program gave students the opportunity to earn a chance for a drawing with each book they read.  The more books read, the more chances a student had to have their name drawn from the entry box. This is the second year the Masonic Lodge #336 has sponsored this program. Two more bicycles will be given away at the end of the school year.
Ray McKenzie and Richard Campbell of the Hallsville Masonic Lodge #336 present bicycles to Gracie Tonnies and Alexander Brinley as part of the Books for Bikes program.
Senior Parent Information

We are in the process of putting together a DVD project for the 2013 Senior class. In this project we'd like to have every senior represented.

Mrs. Susan German will produce the DVD. To complete the project, she will need three pictures of your student. Please send one picture before kindergarten and the other two can be any other age.

Susan would prefer the pictures be scanned, placed in a power point and then e-mailed to her at sgerman@hallsville.org. If you don't have power point, scanning the pictures and sending as a .jpg or other picture format will work. If you don't have a scanner, you can bring or send in pictures to Terri Adkins.

FEBRUARY 4th is the deadline to receive all pictures!

Our desire is to have each student represented.  The video will show at their party and we don't want anyone to be left out. Please send your pictures! The Senior All Night Party Committee will give each senior a copy of the DVD as a gift at the conclusion of the all night party.

On that note, please join us to help plan the 2013 Senior All Night Party.
Monthly meetings are at 6 PM in Terri Adkin's Room.  The dates for the meetings are:
  • January 20
  • February 17
  • March 17
  • April 21
  • May 5
All parents are welcome and we'd love to have your input. For more information, contact  Joni Griffin at 696-2911 or email her at griff5000@aol.com.

We want to extend an invitation to our Intermediate parents to participate in a round table discussion on Thursday, January 17th at 6:00 PM  in our commons area. The purpose of this discussion will be to talk about and review the safety procedures and protocols in our building. If you have questions, please do not hesitate to call our office or email me.

The Middle School is having a dance on February 22nd and we still need soft drink and concession item donations for the event! All the kids loved the Nerds Ropes, Sour Punch Straws and other candy items that were provided by the parents at the fall dance and would love to have more of the same. Please contact Lisa Fowler at lisa_ann_fowler@yahoo.com if you would be willing to donate items for the upcoming dance.

Brittany Brown was the winner of our drawing last Friday; she has won the opportunity to be the assistant principal for the day.

Our quiz bowl team competed in their season opener at Southern Boone in Ashland. We split the meet. Our 7th grade Indians outscored the Eagles 250-200. In this week's news, I would like to share information from an article I read entitled, "Is Teenage Sleep Deprivation a Serious Problem?" This article was published in the American Educator magazine. As many educators and parents are aware, high-school students typically do not sleep enough. Nine hours or more a night is the recommendation for teenagers. The average 18 year-old gets 7.5 hours of sleep during the week and 9.5 on the weekends. Why do they sleep less during the weekday?  There are usually a few reasons, but most common are their preference of wanting to stay up later, "hyper-socialbility" - the desire to be connected with friends as much as possible, combined with the easy access and the presence of electronic media. With sleep deprivation comes negative effects on tasks that require maintaining information, mood, behavior, anxiety, and depression. A student who is deprived of sleep typically will not preform as well on standardized tests. Reports show that a student getting the recommended sleep will be more attentive, and, in most cases, get better grades. So when your student is getting ready to take any type of exam, please make sure they get a good weeks worth of sleep. For more information, you can access and read the article by clicking here.
