Special Olympics Basketball

Five of our Special Olympians (Tyrese Phillips, Austin Sobba, Shelby Smith, Charlie Thompson, and Renick Gallup)  participated in the Central Area Special Olympics Basketball Tournament at the MU Student Recreation Center in Columbia last Saturday.

The first game was back and forth against an evenly matched Columbia All-Stars team, but we came out with a 16-14 victory thanks in large part to Charlie Thompson's hot hand from the field.

Our second game found us matched against a quick and very aggressive New Bloomfield team. Despite our loss to New Bloomfield, our kids still received the gold medal for winning our division.

Revised Lock Down Levels and Procedures

The Hallsville R-IV district safety team has updated the security lock down levels and procedures in our district. Safety continues to be a high priority in our district. Each building is reviewing potential improvements to their safety plans and making changes. We welcome your comments and ideas. Contact your building principal or our district safety coordinator, Mr. Clinton Hague.
Flu season has arrived

It may have already arrived in your household, if not, be prepared. The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat,

and lungs. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccine each year. Most experts believe that flu viruses spread mainly by droplets made when people with flu cough, sneeze or talk. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby. Less often, a person might also get flu by touching a surface or object that has flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth, eyes or possibly their nose.

Signs and symptoms of flu:
  • Fever* or feeling feverish/chills
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue (very tired)
  • Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults.

*It's important to note that not everyone with flu will have a fever.

The Center for Disease Control has a website with more information on the 2012-2013 flu season. On it, you will find information on prevention, treatment, and a section of frequently asked questions.
Berndt retires on December 31st

Long Term Planning Meeting

Thank you to the more than fifty people who attended our meeting on January 2nd and to the many people who filled out and submitted comments via our online form. It is important to us to hear your comments and suggestions. The school board will be discussing the event and making decisions in upcoming board meetings. Your input will help guide our school leaders as they plan for the future growth in our district. KMIZ and KOMU both provided media coverage of the event.

During the meeting, Todd and Joan Burke of Tactical Training Specialties offered to train 20 teachers and staff in the district, a donation valued at $10,000. Mr. and Mrs. Burke have held tactical response training for staff on two different sessions already this school year.
Senior Parent Information

We are in the process of putting together a DVD project for the 2013 Senior class. In this project we'd like to have every senior represented.

Mrs. Susan German will produce the DVD. To complete the project, she will need three pictures of your student. Please send one picture before kindergarten and the other two can be any other age.

Susan would prefer the pictures be scanned, placed in a power point and then e-mailed to her at sgerman@hallsville.org. If you don't have power point, scanning the pictures and sending as a .jpg or other picture format will work. If you don't have a scanner, you can bring or send in pictures to Terri Adkins.

FEBRUARY 4th is the deadline to receive all pictures!

Our desire is to have each student represented.  The video will show at their party and we don't want anyone to be left out. Please send your pictures! The Senior All Night Party Committee will give each senior a copy of the DVD as a gift at the conclusion of the all night party.

On that note, please join us to help plan the 2013 Senior All Night Party.
Monthly meetings are at 6 PM in Terri Adkin's Room.  The dates for the meetings are:
  • January 20
  • February 17
  • March 17
  • April 21
  • May 5
All parents are welcome and we'd love to have your input. For more information, contact  Joni Griffin at 696-2911 or email her at griff5000@aol.com.
Primary School News
Karen JimersonKaren Jimerson, Principal

Sadly, as we begin 2013, we have reason to step back and take a critical look at all the routines and procedures in our school. The tragic event in Connecticut in December has made us keenly aware of our responsibility to be vigilant and as proactive as possible in making our school a safe environment for our children as they learn. During the winter break, the primary staff spent time rethinking some of the things we have taken for granted in our building, and we will be making some changes that we feel will make our routines run more safely and efficiently. One objective with these changes will be to eliminate times during the day when our doors are unlocked. Another goal is to make sure that when children are in transition, especially at the end of the day, our hallways are clear of visitors. This will allow staff members to focus on the children for whom they are responsible and will help eliminate the possibility for mistakes to happen.

During arrival, our doors are well monitored, and children are escorted to the school by their parents and care givers. In contrast, dismissal is a time when the responsibility for the children is clearly in the hands of the staff. With the best interest of the children in mind, we will implement the following changes to our routine on Monday, January 7.

  1. All doors will remain locked throughout the day.
  2. At dismissal, parents and guardians who provide transportation for their children are asked to go through the pickup line in their vehicles. Those who prefer to walk to the door to meet their children may do so but will wait outside the building for their children to be dismissed.
  3. Preschool students will be admitted and dismissed from the preschool area door. Staff members will oversee the use of the door, and visitors other than preschool parents and guardians will be asked to use the main entrance to the building.
  4. When entering the building for any reason, visitors will be asked to sign in and out and to wear a visitor's badge while they are here.
  5. Parents and guardians are welcome to visit the school. We do ask that you contact the classroom teacher to arrange a time that will not interfere with instruction. We also ask that visitors exit the building by 3:10 p.m. to allow time for dismissal preparation.
  6. If dismissal plans change, parents and guardians should notify the teacher in writing.

Please remember that a consistent plan for the end of the day helps us dismiss 240 children in a safe and timely manner. The primary staff takes great pride in the work that we do, and we appreciate all the support and encouragement we receive from our families. We realize that just as we expect the performance of our students to progress, we should also strive to improve individually and as a team of educators. Thank you in advance for your understanding and cooperation as we work to make Hallsville Primary the best it can be.

We will be participating in the Court Warming activities for the high school and will observe the following dress up days this week:

Monday - Mismatch Day
Tuesday - Beach Day
Wednesday - Secret Agent/Super Hero Day
Thursday - Indian/Cowboy/Alien Day
Friday - Hallsville Spirit Day!!

Intermediate School News
Stacy Fick Stacy Fick, Principal

Students were welcomed back to school after the break with a fun reorientation to our Positive Behavior Support (PBS) in a "boot camp" style.  Students, teachers, and staff were dressed in camouflage as they review our behavioral expectations for the second semester.  Grades spent part of the day going to different stations throughout the building where they reviewed expectations. Three, fifth grade students wrote and recorded a "rap" video to add to the excitement.  You can watch that video on our YouTube channel or see in the link below.

In an effort to increase the security of our building, the front doors will be locked during the day.   A doorbell system has been installed to help control and monitor entrance accessibility.  Every adult entering our building must wear a visitor tag, even if you are a frequent visitor. All student cadets must also check into the office and wear an ID badge. A playground radio has been provided so that, while on the playground, teachers can quickly communicate with the office of any suspicious activity outside of the locked play area, or if they need assistance. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we continue to make our school a safer place for our kids!

Middle School News
Clinton Hague, Principal

The Middle School is having a dance on February 22nd and we need soft drink and concession item donations for the event! All the kids loved the Nerds Ropes, Sour Punch Straws and other candy items that were provided by the parents at the fall dance and would love to have more of the same. Please contact Lisa Fowler at lisa_ann_fowler@yahoo.com if you would be willing to donate items for the upcoming dance.

During our Friday morning drawing last week,  Amanda Rasmussen was the winner of the V.I.P. lunch pass. This pass allows her to go directly to the front of the lunch line each day. To be eligible for the drawing, students are given tickets for going above and beyond expectations by staff members. Each Friday we read all of the tickets and draw a winner.

The MS Basketball and Cheer awards will be on January 23, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. in the West Gym. Please come support our student athletes.
High School News

With the events that have happened lately, attention once again is focusing on school safety...and rightfully so. It saddens everyone's heart to think about how an event that occurred in Newtown, CT happens. Where did society fail? Was it the parents, teachers, some other social group, that failed to teach this person character. At a conference I attended a couple years ago, the following question was asked to the more than 400 professional educators:  "What do you teach?" Secondary/Middle School educators stated a specific content area such as history, science, math, art, etc. Elementary educators said a specific grade such as 2nd grade or sixth grade, etc. The speaker was looking for the answer, "we all teach students." The biggest thrill I ever received in my educational career was not for a student to be able to tell me who invented the removable printing press (Johannes Guttenburg, 1315), but to see that student be able to know how best to live their life and face the challenges of the world that they would be immersed in.

All adults are responsible to teach character education each day. We do this by example -  how we greet each other and how we react to others. The messages we send to our students through our behavior in and out of the classroom, our expectations for them, and our interactions with them all convey character education. It is the little things we do. What type of character are we all teaching and modeling for our students at school, the home, and at events?
