Hallsville R-IV Schools and Security
Hallsville R-IV Public Schools is extremely saddened by the tragic events that occurred in Connecticut last Friday.
Please be assured that the safety of our students and staff is our top priority. The district's safety and security team has a comprehensive crisis plan in place with countless hours spent preparing for any crisis.
They will be closely reviewing details of Friday's event and will be looking for opportunities to decrease the likelihood of an event such as this from happening. Before school started this fall, our faculty and staff went through training that simulated an active shooter in our school. More information on that event can be seen on the video below.

If you have any questions about safety and security measures in our schools, or have concerns, you are encouraged to call us at 573-696-5512. Our safety coordinator is Mr. Clinton Hague.
Finally, an extremely challenging task for parents in the days ahead will be visiting with your young children about this tragedy. Below is a helpful link, provided by ABC News, that gives tips for parents with helping kids cope. This link can be accessed by clicking here.

Bequette to Represent Missouri at USSYP
Hallsville Senior Zachary Bequette is one of two Missouri high school seniors who have won a week-long, expense-paid trip to our nation's capital as delegates in the United States Senate Youth Program ( USSYP). Zach will also receive a $5,000 undergraduate college scholarship to the college or university of his choice, with encouragement to pursue coursework in history and political science. The other student chosen is Anjali Fernandes from the Pattonville R-III School District in St. Ann
The USSYP will be held March 9-16, 2013 in Washington, D.C., where the Missouri students will assemble with 102 other delegates to learn about the functions of the federal government. The delegates will visit the Senate, House of Representatives, Supreme Court and Pentagon, and will meet with their senators and other national policy makers.
The winners and alternates were chosen from among eight state finalists. A panel consisting of staff from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and The Missouri Bar selected the delegates. Nearly 80 juniors or seniors were nominated for the program this year by high school principals from public and nonpublic schools. Nominations were based on school and community leadership, community service and academic achievement.
USSYP was established by the U.S. Senate in 1962 to further educate successful student leaders interested in pursuing a career in public service. Financial support for the program is provided by The Hearst Foundations. | Bequette is flanked by Principal Bob Plourde and Superintendent John Robertson. |

Mid-year assessments were completed last week for all kindergarten and first grade students. The progress they have made since August is outstanding! Teachers have been excited to share assessment results and will use this information to plan for instruction as the New Year begins. Thank you for supporting this learning at home by practicing math facts and reading with your children each day.
If you have visited the primary building recently, you have seen our Christmas tree decorated with beautiful ornaments made by our students. It is fun to watch the children stopping to point out their own artwork on the tree. These ornaments will be your treasures soon. After twenty-five years, I am still hanging the ornaments my own children made in elementary school. They are my favorites.
This week will be short - and exciting! We will have our class Christmas parties on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. We appreciate all the help and contributions from parents to make this a special day for our students. Christmas break begins at the close of the school day on December 19. Students return to school on Thursday, January 3, 2013. The faculty and staff of Hallsville Primary hope you have a wonderful holiday season!

The 18th annual Jingle Bell Shop has concluded. This tradition provides fourth graders the opportunity to enhance their economics unit. They experience authentic tasks of counting change, persuading customers through persuasive writing opportunities, and learn character traits such as honesty and compassion.
Our fifth grade students also enjoyed a special lunch last week as our etiquette unit concluded. Parents and staff served lunch in a "restaurant" atmosphere complete with music and dessert. For pictures of that event, click here, and be sure to watch for the video that highlights the event on our YouTube channel.
Speaking of YouTube, have you seen the videos on leadership that our fifth grade classes have produced? You can view these and other videos on our YouTube channel. The videos will be a part of the December character assembly this coming Wednesday. We are planning to livestream the event beginning at 1:30 PM. We will start broadcasting at approximately 1:15 PM barring any technical difficulties. This is the first time we have attempted to broadcast this event live. To watch the assembly, click here at the time of the event.
When we return to school in January, our students will have a reorientation to our Positive Behavior Support (PBS) in a "boot camp" style. We encourage our students and staff to wear camo clothing that day for a fun day as we review our behavioral expectations for the second semester.

As the semester comes to an end, parents of students taking AP, dual credit, or college prep classes may hear..."this class is too hard for me and will hurt my GPA, can I drop it please?" After visiting one of the top rated public high schools in the country this past fall, I found the way they approached this issue interesting and it gave me a new perspective. Students taking these classes in high school have an extra "safety net" in place - teachers who are willing to give them more support than they are likely to get in college. Once in college, they will be taking five or more classes at the same level without the extra support. Teaching students to keep working during a more challenging course and to develop strategies to succeed should be the goal of the school, parents, and the student.
If your student is concerned about their class ranking, it is important to note that trends are pointing to the decline of importance of class rankings. Many colleges are starting to look more at the courses students take rather than GPA and class rankings. In high school, my daughter struggled with a college level class and wanted to get out at semester. I didn't budge and later on she thanked me, mentioning the challenge prepared her for college more than anything else. If your student is planning to go to college, they should also take a math class their senior year. Several institutions are now requiring students who did not take a math class their senior year to take a refresher math course the first year of college. The cost of tuition is the same as other classes, but no college credit is awarded. This is also finals week at our building. Encourage your student to get plenty of rest, eat a balanced diet, and drink plenty of water. The schedule for final exams is as follows: Monday, December 17th: 2nd, 6th, and 8th periods
Tuesday, December 18th: 1st. 3rd, 5th, and 7th periods
Wednesday, December 19th: Exam make-up day for any missed finals. In closing, if you were unable to attend our winter concert from the band and choir, you can watch it on our YouTube channel here. |
