CSIP Committee Openings
The Hallsville R-IV School District is currently in the process of revising our Comprehensive School Improvement Plan (CSIP). The CSIP serves as a guiding document and is used by administration, faculty, and staff as we continually strive to provide the best educational experience for our students. We are eager to receive stakeholder feedback on our draft CSIP document, and are also searching for parents, older students, faculty, and community members to serve on our CSIP review committee. For more information, please visit the district web site here.

Inclement Weather Planning
Today was a chilly reminder that we are nearing the official start of winter and hazardous weather conditions are likely to occur from time to time. There are numerous ways you can find out whether or not Hallsville R-IV Schools will be in session:
(will be sent via email on that day)
Local television/radio stations
Schoolreach telephone alert system
In the event of an early dismissal due to weather, parents should instruct children what to do, whom to contact, and where to go if school is dismissed early.

 Hallsville Hosts ACT Exam
Saturday, December 8, 2012, Hallsville High School hosted the ACT college entrance exam for the first time. Hosting this exam in our school district had several advantages, the best of which was a reduction in test anxiety since students could take the exam in their "home" environment. Seventy-eight students from Hallsville and Harrisburg registered and took the exam.
The ACT testing sites are subject to strict new regulations regarding identification and locations. Every student is required to present proper identification which must be documented. Even if students are personally known to the exam proctors, without the proper ID, they are not allowed to take the exam. These procedures help to maintain the integrity of the exam and the testing sites.

Over the past decade, goals for learning have become more detailed and specific at all grade levels. From kindergarten through high school we assess progress on expected learning objectives often to ensure that our students have mastered what is needed to move on to the next level.
During a recent team meeting, the kindergarten teachers noted that many of our students need to build fluency in recognition and formation of teen numbers. They talked about strategies to use here at school, and they also decided to let our parents know how critical this skill is to future success for our students. This week, an activity is being sent home to enlist the help of our families with practice that can be done at home. First grade teachers send reading materials and vocabulary lists home routinely as important practice to build reading fluency and comprehension. It is amazing how much growth comes from just a few minutes of extra reading each night!
Teachers at the primary often work together in support of student achievement, and we know that our parents are on our team. We all have the same goal - the best education we can provide for our kids. Thank you for all that you do!

A pressing concern in the Hallsville School District is to address the needs of the special education population of students in the least restrictive environment. The Individuals with Disabilities Act demanded that students with disabilities be taught in the same environment as their non-disabled peers. In a stark contrast, many districts, including the Hallsville School District, pulled students out of their regularly assigned classroom and taught them in isolation of their peers. This model was not aligned with the Response to Intervention model that the Hallsville School District had implemented. Response to Intervention practices includes a three tier instructional approach to meeting students' needs. When students are pulled from regular education instruction to receive special education services, the students miss vital information shared by the regular education teacher. In essence, this practice does not close the achievement gap; it increases it. This following video will provide a quick look at the co-teaching model and how it is being implemented in our district.

The 7th and 8th grade choir/band will be performing this Tuesday, December 11, 2012 at 6:30 PM in the North Gym. The 6th grade choir/band concert will be next Monday evening, December 17th at 6:30 PM in the North Gym. We will be having a MAP reward sock hop next Wednesday during 6th and 7th hour. This event is for students who scored advanced, proficient or showed improvement on last years map test. The character assembly will follow during 8th hour. We will recognize the December students of the month. Science students at Hallsville Middle School have put the finishing touches on their hot air balloon projects. The 7th grade and 8th grade students have been building 3 meter hot air balloons. 7th grade uses it to teach about molecular movement and weather (heat transfer and density is involved). The 8th grade students use it for heat transfer concepts (review of 7th grade concepts too). Weather permitting, balloons will be launched before Christmas break. |
