Happy Holidays.
Whew, it's been a tough year for you. If it wasn't the economy looking gloomy, it was the election getting nasty, a storm dropping another tree on a power line, a horrific shooting, or talk of a fiscal cliff.
.
Ok, it is what it is but it is the holiday season.
Give your kids a big hug. Get out of the house. Take an evening drive. Visit the neighbors. Stroll Safeway's aisle. Check out the Farmers. Sip at Starbucks. Try a pint at the Brogue, a sandwich at the Tavern, pasta at Dante's ... you get the idea. Party somewhere.
This is the season to make and share some memories. Enjoy your holidays! We'll see you at the bottom of the cliff. |

Our Tree.
|
Village Brief
The Village got filled with holiday decorations and decorations. The leaves were picked up and the stockings were hung. Parents got upset with planned FCPS AAP program changes and Interstate 7 widening took one small step forward.
The GF tree was lit to much fanfare and was fun for all. Its pic went viral on us. But, all the talk was about the proverbial "deer in the headlights" that arrived with Santa Claus. An unknown and shy Santa (aka Mike Kearney) helper struggled to keep up with the unexpectedly large crowd and demand for popcorn.
The Chez Francois crew got its beautiful lights up and the stocking hung by the fire while Chef Jacques sat by his tree waiting for early gifts. He got one when Open Table named Chez one of the Best 100 restaurants.
Brx hung it's lovely Christmas ornaments and cranked the xmas tunes. The Travelocity gnome donned Christmas attire and stood watch by Brx's famed Table 10. The rockers at the Tavern got busted listening to Christmas music. Station 12 conducted its annual "Toys for Tots". Santa was seen skiing behind an old car on Walker Road by the auto repair shop. The Exxon started readying for its move across the street.
USPS continued to sink deeper into debt. UPS and FedEx package trucks added to the traffic jams on our roads and drives. And Deli Italiano delivered through it all.
There are now 1,074 GF professionals networking and connecting in the Great Falls Network group on LinkedIn. Their group buy got lots of generators installed in time for the holidays and presumably upcoming winter storms and power outages.
A GF Jeweler was ordered to pack his bags and head to prison following his conviction on multiple counts of swapping unsuspecting customers' jewels with lesser quality stones. Call or write him here. (Victim? Contact Fairfax PD. Want to know more? Read reviews on google+)

Terre retired from Wolf Trap and went to shoot pics out west somewhere. Dulles turned 50 and those mobile lounges 93. Now if they could only move the those terminals closer to the parking lots ..
.
The "Sky Guy" spoke of Martian Rovers, distant Voyagers, and killer asteroids at the Rotary. BTW, it's official: NASA announced Asteroid 2011 AG5 will not obliterate GF along with the rest of the Blue Marble.
.
Landscapers and crows started heading south for the winter. Yes GF is quiet now with the mowers and blowers gone but now we have gen sets to listen to. Kids made lists and everyone else went online or to Tysons to shop and sit in traffic.

Five+ Questions .. "Mother Penny"
"There is a place for you .."
.
Meet The Reverend Penelope Bridges; most people just call her Penny but the kids call her Mother Penny. At St Francis as Rector since April 2003, she became an American citizen in August 2012. Her car is sports a "Caution: Driver Singing" sticker. She has friends in high places so don't crash into here while gawking.
Ed: Hey, you hang out at the Brogue?
PB: Why yes, I do. As a genuine Irish priest (I grew up in Belfast), I have a natural affinity for the Old Brogue/Katies, which reminds me of the Northern Ireland pubs where my father used to sell Guinness in the 60's. I have breakfast at Katie's every Thursday in the hope that someone will come by and want to have a conversation. If there's a question you've always wanted to ask a priest but you never got around to actually entering a church, Thursday morning is your chance! I'm there from 8 to 9 am; just look for the woman in the collar and the notice that says "The Episcopal Church Welcomes You". We really mean it! For those who prefer their conversations in the afternoon, my colleague Ben Shelton is at Starbucks on Tuesday from 4 to 5.

.
Ed: What's new at the church?
PB: Plenty! The members of St. Francis are energetic and creative, so there's always something going on. This fall we sent a small group of volunteers to a girls' home in southern Virginia to paint and clean. We had a Bluegrass Sunday in November where Larry Rice and The Big Cheese led us in toe-tapping worship. We'll have two traditional Anglican services of Lessons and Carols (think King's College, Cambridge) on January 6 to celebrate the season. And we are raising money to send a group to South Sudan in April, to visit a school we have supported since 1998. If you want to know more about St. Francis without coming to church, you can listen to our sermon podcasts each week through iTunes (St. Francis Episcopal Church free podcast), Facebook (facebook.com/stfrancisgf), or our web site, stfrancisgreatfalls.org. Recent topics have included the presidential election, zombies, and God's instruction to "Keep calm and carry on".
Ed: What do you like/dislike about GF? PB: One of the best things about Great Falls is the way the churches work together for the common good through the Great Falls Ecumenical Council. We collaborate on Good Friday and Easter services; we take turns providing bagged dinners for the Salvation Army Grate Patrol in DC and Sterling; we ring the bell for the Salvation Army outside Safeway in December; we hold a joint Vacation Bible School in the summer. Four of our eight member churches work together on training and supervising Stephen Ministers, church members who are carefully trained to accompany people through difficult times in their lives. Outside of the churches I am very encouraged to see the new Senior Center Without Walls provide social and cultural events for our beloved elders, a group that can easily be overlooked in a community like this. The one thing that baffles me about Great Falls is how we can be barely 25 miles from the center of Washington and still have our power cut off at the lightest breeze.
Ed: Did you ask Santa for anything?
PB: Every year I ask Santa (or St. Nicholas as I call him) to help us at St. Francis provide a warm and welcoming church home for all visitors, especially those who come to us for the first time at one of our five Christmas services. Our motto is "There's a place for you at St. Francis", and I really believe there's a place for everyone here; our tradition provides a uniquely broad umbrella under which people of all viewpoints may feel comfortable.
Ed: And your New Year's Resolution is ...?
PB: To practice my viola more so that I don't embarrass my colleagues in the McLean Orchestra; to give thanks every day for the blessings of community, faith, friends, and family; and now that I'm a voting citizen, to pay more attention to local issues of justice and poverty.
.
And of course, I wish everyone a very Merry Christmas.
(Ed: Nominate yourself (even if you think you are a nobody or submit your favorite Five Questions candidate.)

Farmer's (Winter) Market
".. we buy everything we can at the market .."
The farmers market operates every Saturday morning at the Walker Road entrance of the Village Center in the heart of Great Falls.
It just completed its Five Year Anniversary and on December 1st opened its first winter season in response to vendor and shopper demand. Wrote one shopper devotee:
"At first I used to come to the market just to buy pickles. I love the pickles. Then I tried the chocolate. I was then purchasing pickles and chocolate every weekend. Then I gave the chicken and the pork a try...then beef...then olive oil and the aged vinegar...and the breads...and the veggies and fruits.
Now my wife and I come every weekend and we buy everything we can at the market. Then we go to other stores for whatever else is remaining on our list. We are eating so well and enjoying every minute of it. The market means a great deal to us."
It also means a great deal to local chef entrepreneurs who source fresh produce and other items at the market. They are there every Saturday but don't look for the tents on very windy days.
The market came about when local residents expressed a desire to be able to buy local produce and meet and greet neighbors in a convenient setting. Today it owes its success as much to its local devotees and its vendors as it does to a media savvy marketing program leveraging both word of mouth and the internet. You don't know GF unless you know the market.
Visit www.greatfallsfarmersmarket.org for more information. Weekly announcements are posted to the Great Falls Network on Linkedin and the Great Falls Insider on facebook. To shop at the market, enter the Village Center through the Walker Road entrance and make your way behind the former hardware store.
