Missed the issue? We did too.
We were so busy with getting ready for the superstorm at home and keeping you informed with changing conditions and alerts via facebook we skipped our regular issue. We opted instead to forward county emergency and other advice.

Wow, we got lucky.
We really really "dodged a bullet" last month. This Thanksgiving remember all those who are still recovering in the aftermath of our first Superstorm.
Thankfully the elections are over and the robocalls have stopped. We lost track of how many times Clint Eastwood called to chat about his favorite chair.
So now you're busy with activities and Thanksgiving and Christmas planning and shopping. It's a great time of year to have fun and just enjoy it all.
This town is full of trees and googuls of leaves this month we'll go leaf spotting with a nifty little app we came across. Smart as an arborist you will be. (We were to do that and more last month but Sandy changed that plan!)
And let's also out that shy, gifted someone who fell in love with Africa and who for years has been changing the world, one little village at a time.
It's so nice to be so lucky, smart, and as you'll see below wanted.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING - ed.
BTW, ENJOY BLACK FRIDAY & CYBER MONDAY. SHOP LOCAL! |

Village Brief
Thanks to a certain Ms Murphy, the Saturday Farmers' Market has became the place to see and be seen! Meet your local chefs and other village notables while you shop for your fresh foods. (More next issue.)
VDOT and neighbors have removed innumerable dangerous and "not so" trees. The dangerous trees at Walker & 193 are still there. Speaking of roads, with warning aplenty, plan on a six mile detour on Beach Mill next summer. VDOT is seeking your input on the plans to supersize Rte 7. Ouch, MWAA voted to increase tolls on the Access Road.
Riverbend Park faced budget cuts reducing staff and restricting operations. Some are wondering what's to happen to the deteriorating Mark Turner House. The Mall work is done in time for the holidays. Safeway's now got an app to make shopping fun!
Seems everyone is looking for you. The Senior Citizens Group is actively looking for businesses to sponsor their future events around the village. The Rotary Club is looking for new members. Trailblazers started using Sign Up Genius to sign up hiker/volunteers for trail work and fun. (Trails going fast, signup NOW!) And finally, Parks is looking for you to rent the Grange, Old Schoolhouse or any of their other historic properties for your next private or corporate event.
Nice to be wanted.

Five Questions ..
"One village at a time .."
Meet Alisa Cozzens
GF resident, founder of Serve A Village, and winner RCGF's Citizen of the Year award.
Ed: How did Serve A Village get started? AC: My mother, Kathryn Hunt, moved from San Francisco in the early 70s to live on a rural farm in South Africa. She made it her mission for 35 years to care for the residents of the farm and the local village. She built and supported two schools for children, fought to have homes with electricity provided for their families, and spent her days caring for the villagers' welfare. She inspired our whole family to do all we could to improve the quality of their lives and to make service an integral part of who we are. Ed: Brag. AC: Our volunteers do so much with so little.
 | | Orphan Pre School |
We have started a library and collected and shipped over a 1,000 books and 2,000 eye glasses to Kenya, collected and shipped 100s of bikes to Kenya, and refurbished an AIDS orphans preschool in S. Africa.
We also collected and distributed an amazing quantity of First Aid and Emergency supplies to Haiti, schools bags, hygiene kits, medical supplies, clothes, etc. to South Africa, Kenya, Russia, and Haiti, and provided emergency relief to Bastrup, Texas.
We have also organized and led a number of very successful service expeditions to Africa, and made a significant and positive change in the lives of both those who are served, and those that serve. Recently, in conjunction with Great Falls and Ashburn Rotarians, we shipped 10,000 diapers to hurricane sticken areas in NY and NY.
Ed: Give us your best donation pitch.
AC: Serve A Village is an organization that will maximize the impact of any donation and allow you to influence for good the lives of those who are most needy in the world. 100% of all donations will be spent on the needy.
Ed: You give away 100%?
AC: we do. Our's is an entirely volunteer run organization and each of our volunteers makes an effort to carve out time every week that we dedicate to Serve a Village, in addition to attending to our own jobs, families and community responsibilities. We personally cover any incidental overhead expenses that are incurred.
Ed: Will you ever stop?
AC: NO! Serve a Village is an expression of who each of us are. Several of our volunteers have been involved in these efforts for 40 years, and new generations of volunteers are stepping up, wanting to make service part of their lifestyle. Serve a Village has become an organization that has taken on a life of its own. People just want to be involved. They want to do good at home and abroad!
 | | Serve A Village |
I am blessed to be able to help them do that.
I can thank my mom for that.
(Ed: Submit your favorite Five Questions candidate.)

Drive it to believe it. The car is far from being a new version of it's clunky and often troubled earlier brethren. Its v6 thinks its a v8 and its loaded with features drawn from luxury branded SUVs. This one puts "Sport" back into an SUV with 7 seats! Made in USA. Read the Car & Driver review.

1st Stage in Tysons
Hailed as "high-octane entertainment" (Talkin' Broadway), Altar Boyz is a holy inspiring story of five small-town boys - Matthew, Mark, Luke, Juan and Abraham - trying to save the world one screaming fan at a time. Their pious pop act may have worked wonders on the Ohio bingo-hall-and-pancake-breakfast circuit, but when fate brings them to New York City, they find themselves up against the hard edges and soft temptations of the Big Apple.
With angelic voices, sharp parody, sinfully spectacular dancing and a touching story, Altar Boyz is destined to rock the masses of all ages and all denominations! Learn more/Buy tickets |
Roz's Report
It's always a good time of year to check your smoke detectors!
There are two very different types:
- Ionization: Popular, inexpensive, gives quick loud alerts for burnt toast and pots.
- Photoelectric: Sensitive to smoldering furniture.
Check out this video and be prepared to change your smoke detector. It may save your life.
| Statistic | Values | YoY | MoM |
|---|
| Total Sold Dollar Volume | $18,786,097 | -22.44% | -15% | | Closed Sales | 16 | -23.81% | -27.27% | | Median Sold Price | $991,250 | -9.89% | +0.13% | | Avg Sold Price | $1,174,131 | +1.8% | +16.87% | | Avg Days on Market | 103 days | -27.97% | +94.34% | | Avg Sold to Orig List Ratio | 95.08% | +2.9% | +1.59% |
There is so much positive news regarding real estate in general. New homes sales surged over the previous month and are almost 30% higher YOY. Most of the increase occurred in the Northeast.
If you thinking of investing in a second home or wanting to move, you may want to do it sooner, rather than later, as foreclosures have decreased as have most of the big discounts on home prices. Investors are coming back into the market place forcing discounted homes back up in price.
