Whips and Fear
 

Many whips are inside men, who do not know how they got there, or indeed that they are there. In the movement from authority to manipulation, power shifts from the visible to the invisible, from the known to the anonymous. Exploitation becomes less material and more psychological.

Fear is the number one obstacle for workers who support unions. It starts out as fear of retaliation, then becomes fear of losing what they have, fear of the union as described by management, fear of strikes and plant closings and finally, it just becomes fear of change.
