Fun Fact | According to the National Turkey Federation, nearly 88% of Americans eat turkey on Thanksgiving. In 2011, approximately 736 million pounds of turkey were consumed on Thanksgiving. Minnesota leads the way in turkey production with 46.2 million in 2011. Happy Turkey Day! |

Greetings! |
With the election less than a week away, I would like to remind you to get out and vote! There are number of issues and candidates on the ballot that could have a significant impact on small businesses over the next four years, so be sure you exercise your right to be heard on these important issues. For more information on where to vote, candidates, and issues, visit the Minnesota Secretary of State's web site.
This month's newsletter is all about QuickBooks! Intuit recently released QuickBooks 2013 and there are quite a few new features that I would like to share with you. I typically recommend that QuickBooks users upgrade their software at least every 3 years - that is the length of time Intuit supports its QuickBooks products. The older software will still function, but you will not be able to obtain technical support for anything over 3 years old, which could have an impact on your business if you run into a technical problem. Besides the issue of technical support, upgrading will also give you access to the new features and functions that have been added to the product since you last purchased it.
You can purchase QuickBooks 2013 products at most larger retailers, such as office supply and electronic stores, as well as many online stores. If you are interested in purchasing or upgrading, please give me a quick call first to determine which product is going to be right for you and where you can obtain the best pricing. As a ProAdvisor, I can get significant discounts on software and supplies, and I would be happy to extend these discounts to you, my valued customers.
My next newsletter will be out in early December. I plan on offering helpful tips for preparing for year end so you are not caught in a last minute crunch to get ready for the new year.
Until then, have a great month!
Tracey

hat's New in QuickBooks 2013 |
There are quite a few enhancements to the 2013 family of QuickBooks products. In this article, I will focus on features that are widely available in most or all QuickBooks products vs. features that are only available in certain versions (for example, the Accountant version contains functions and features specific to an accountant's needs and may not be very useful to the small business user). If you have questions on specific versions of QuickBooks or would like some additional guidance on choosing the right version for you, please contact me via phone or email.
PLEASE NOTE: The features below refer only to the desktop versions of QuickBooks. If you use QuickBooks Online, new features and functions will be displayed when you log into the your account after the QuickBooks Online team applies an update.
NEW FEATURES
- New "Tips" Window - tips that provide a quick visual reference to new features appear in overlay windows, which you can choose to minimize or close. The tips are also available via the Help menu.
- More Readable Forms and Registers - increased font size and row heights, as well as shaded rows to make it easier to read information on computer screens.
- Ability to Maximize Forms on the Screen for Easier Viewing - choose to maximize a form for easier on-screen viewing and to hide background graphics
- New Home Page Design - new, refreshed and updated look includes new icons, larger fonts and rows for improved readability. There is also an option to move the tool bar to the left side of the screen to optimize desktop space on wide-screen monitors.
- New & Expanded Functionality in Customer, Vendor and Payroll Centers - access related information with a single mouse click; expanded contact information fields are easily customized to allow mulitple notes in up to 8 fields per record.
- Vendor Credits Now Display on Check/Bill Payment Stubs - credits applied to vendor invoices now display on the check stub or bill payment stub, making it easier for your vendors to properly apply your payments.
- Easier Access to Apps and Add-on Features - extend the power of QuickBooks with easy access to apps and services to help you get the most from your QuickBooks software. Apps include mobile payment services, e-billing, time tracking and many other services.
- New Transaction Ribbon Bar - new ribbon-style bar appears above most transaction screens (i.e. invoices, bills, purchase orders, etc.) and gives access to important functions and features that were previously difficult to locate on the screen.
- Paste into Search Field - when using Help, you can now paste text into the search field using Copy and Paste
In addition to the new features described above, there are numerous features and updates to both the Accountant and Enterprise editions of QuickBooks. If you would like more information about these versions, please contact me.
Keep in mind that if you are using a version of QuickBooks older than 2012, upgrading to the 2013 version will give you access to all of the new features that were introduced in 2012 as well. If you would like more information on features that were added in previous versions of QuickBooks, please contact me.
Don't forget that you can get discounts on the software and related forms, such as checks, by contacting me, so please feel free to call me at 763.227.1841 or email me at First Tier Accounting to get your discounts!
