President's Message
Dear Member:
I recently read an article on how designers are joining the fight for a healthier America (Icon Spring '13). Instead of sitting in front of desks all day, most workers are standing up to higher desks; walking on" treadmill desks"; working in environments that promote moving around, such as using staircases that are attractive and well lit. Designers are helping to promote these ideas by designing interiors that boost opportunity for physical activities. Interior designers can positively help change communities and their health.
Designers have had the opportunity to let the public know about their skills and talents through a variety of positive community involvement projects. Designers all over the nation are teaming up with charitable organizations such as the Food Bank, various veterans associations, Habitat for Humanity, and other groups to help those in need.
Two ASID Student Chapters in our region are working on designing "Healthy Spaces" for a cancer patient in need in the area (University of Akron and Virginia Marti College). The students are working philanthropically for a real-life design experience. The partnership with a local cancer foundation (KEM Cancer Foundation) has given the students a chance to use the skills they learn in the classroom to benefit a patient recovering from the disease. It has been rewarding to watch how people can be so generous - volunteering their time, money and resources for the benefit of the community. Thanks to all who have been involved in these ventures and we look forward to seeing the completed spaces soon.
One way to stay involved in contributing to other forms of community health, safety and welfare is to actively participate in ASID efforts and programs. I would like to encourage you to become an active part of the ASID community, find a way to stay connected, become a part of a community of positive thinkers and generous hearts.
If you have an idea for a community project or if you are involved in any volunteering design project let us know - perhaps we can engage more members in helping out with your efforts.
Being an active member of ASID is a two-way street. We want you to make the most of your membership and give us feedback. Get involved, suggest a program, ask questions, and recognize what you want to take advantage of today.
Thanks for your support.
Best Regards,
