As one year ends and a new one approaches many of us decide on making mindful resolutions. As an ASID member please consider adding these to your 2013 resolutions:

Networking and volunteering for your local ASID chapter!

2013 will bring a new format to the chapter's tradeshow:  Save the date - April 4th - the ASID Ohio North NEW tradeshow: The Business of Design. You will be able to network and expand your business by participating on exciting discussions. More details to come soon.

Mark your calendars for January 23rd and plan to attend After-Hours - an Emerging Professionals and Students Program. Join ASID Ohio North professionals to hear a lively panel discussion on best business practices for owning and running your own interior design company.

Network

At a recent webinar I attended through ASID.org, I learned that 85% of jobs are being secured today via referrals and networking. Many business agreements happen during networking events as well. Consider participating on the upcoming events and activities organized by the chapter. I recommend you try networking with the members of ASID Ohio North - it is exciting! We build business relationships that are rooted on friendship and generosity.

Students and recent graduates, you have a chance to meet design professionals and industry partners and connect with people from your industry - many job openings are not advertised and are learned through networking opportunities.

If you are graduating in the spring, do not forget to apply for your student advanced membership with ASID upon graduation - Allied ASID appellation use (a $500 savings for student members). Don't miss out on the opportunity to extend your professional contact base and career development - advance your membership today!   Click here to learn more for additional career tips and membership benefits for Emerging Professionals.

Real World Design Week (RWDW)

Many students have started their networking process by participating in RWDW. Thanks to all professionals who volunteered their times to mentor a student for a day last month. Hopefully you have created relationships to last longer than one day or one week.

Volunteer

More volunteering opportunities are available with the chapter for the coming year. If you have an idea, can spare a couple hours, or can commit to being a committee or a board member we would welcome your participation and value your support! Feel free to contact me or Susan Kiel at admin@asidohio.org, if you are willing to help out with our efforts such as educational programs, fundraising events, trade show, and student activities.

My best wishes to you for a safe, healthy and productive 2013!

Happy Holidays!

Cristina McCarthy, M.S., Allied ASID
President 2012-2013
Congratulations to ASID Ohio North

The ASID Ohio North Chapter was a November 2012 Retention All Star!  We were in the top five chapters retaining the greatest percentage of practitioner members between October 1, 2012 and November 1, 2012!

Thank you to our members!
Call For Nominations

Chapters are a vital component of ASID membership delivering programs and services.  Volunteer leaders are the lifeblood of the chapter by managing its operations and spearheading projects, programs and communications.

We are looking for volunteers for next year's Board of Directors.  If you are interested in being nominated for a Board leadership position, please contact Rita Amonett, ASID, Nominations Chair

As a board member, you gain more than you give.
ASID Ohio North Announces a New Program

The ASID Ohio North Chapter is excited to announce a new sponsorship program.  Contributions at different sponsorship levels will provide recognition for participating companies, while assisting the chapter with continuing to offer quality programs and administrative support.

Please click here to learn more!  Please share the program with companies that you know would benefit from this exciting opportunity to market and network with the decision makers of NE Ohio.

GET YOUR MO-JO ON

Since events around the holidays are in short supply (and time is short for all of us this time of year) I've decided to highlight some less heard of venues/groups that you should look into in the New Year.

Blank Canvas Theatre

Blank Canvas Theatre provides professional quality productions, placing emphasis on entertainment at affordable prices. They are dedicated to creating a new love for theatre in the Cleveland community while providing another venue for those who already love the arts.   "Theatre For The People" is their mantra. Located in a salvaged building at 1305 W. 78th Street, Suite 211.

The Cleveland Salon

An experiment in civil discourse, the Salon schedules two topics of interest for discussion with guest speakers and strict rules of participation. #1. You must participate in the Salon #2. Only one person talking at a time. How novel!! Consider it an antidote to the past election insanity.

Convergence-continuum

This theatre group's artistic home is the intimate performance space known as The Liminis. 2438 Scranton Road in Tremont.  "Its name was created from an ancient word meaning "threshold". "The space is transfigured for every production, so that when you cross its threshold, you leave behind the conventional reality of everyday life and are immersed with the unique world of the play." Shows sell out fast. For more info:

Booker T. Cleveland Society for the Learned

Inspired by the Book Club in Paris, this group meets once a month at an appropriate venue to swap books and conversation (alcohol is usually involved). Bring a favorite book; talk to three people about their books and you swap. Turn OFF your TV and read a book! For more info:

As always if you have anything in mind that you'd like me to mention  send me a note.

Update on CEU Requirements

The ASID National Board approved raising the required CEUs for all members in the Professional, Allied and Associate categories.

Raising CEUs builds members' competencies by expanding knowledge and encourages ASID members to advance their skills relevant to specific practice areas.

Our current CEU requirement is no longer in line with other organiza-
tions representing the built environment.  This initiative emphasizes the Society's commitment to education and establishes a greater consistency with increasing collaboration in the profession.

Effective January 1, 2014, the CEU requirement will increase from 0.6 to 1.0 (i.e., 10 hours) for a two-year period.

Note that this does not affect the current reporting period, requiring 0.6 CEUs by December 31, 2013.

The first reporting period with the new 1.0 CEU requirement will begin January 1, 2014, and end on December 31, 2015.

CEUs can be easily documented on the IDCEC website, which provides a great way to track all of your courses, including those not part of the IDCEC database. ASID members may warehouse their CEUs with IDCEC free of charge.
