Downtown NIA
For over a year conversations with neighbors and stakeholders have taken place about Monroe and Downtown Neighborhood Improvement Associations (NIA)Monroe re-activated last December and conversations with Downtown neighbors have continued. A Downtown dinner event will take place June 16, 6:00-7:30 PM at the YMCA. Free BBQ and door prizes will be available. Please share this with those who live downtown. Boundaries include roughly the River on the north side, Topeka Boulevard on the west, 10th Street on the south and SE Adams/Branner Street on the east. The City of Topeka's Americorps team is helping with a walk and talk through the neighborhood alongside other downtown residents June 8 and 9. Email Kristen if you are interested in helping. UMB bank has provided funds for the food, the YMCA has provided space, and Heartland Visioning is coordinating the event. 
50 Year Tornado Celebration
Half a century ago Topeka's devastating tornado hit and Bill Kurtis provided information and comfort to Topekans through television. Kurtis, now a nationally known television journalist and Washburn University School of Law graduate, will be the featured speaker at Twist of Fate, The Topeka Capital-Journal's special 50th anniversary commemoration of the tornado. A VIP reception will be held at 5:00 PM on June 4th, followed by a public program at 7:00 PM. Both events will be held at Washburn University.

Topeka Gives
"Topeka Gives," an all-day event centered around charitable giving, is slated for Tuesday, June 7, 2016 inside Fairlawn Plaza Mall. This year, 157 nonprofit organizations will be participating and the "match money" has grown to $73,500.00. The organizations participating and the match money has grown exponentially over the years!  

"We hope in 2016 people will again join us and not only contribute to the causes they care about but learn more about the organizations in our community that provide outstanding programs and services for our neighbors, friends and families," -Marsha Pope, Topeka Community Foundation President.
