President's Perspective

Live, Love, Learn: Enjoy Community Education Classes at HCC! Within the  Fall 2016 Community Education Class Schedule you'll find classes to learn more about the starry night, write songs: live, love, and learn. Community Education classes are meant to have fun, to try out new ideas, to expand your horizons. Many thanks to Rachael Baar, Jo Ann Brock, faculty teaching in the program and others who have supported our new session of CE classes!

Nursing Seminar: Early this morning I attended presentations from the fourth-semester Nursing students. The presentations were well-researched and presented. One presentation on substance abuse in nurses was especially brought home by the case study of an impaired nurse. I appreciate that our students are examining these tough topics while still at HCC! Many thanks to Dr. Carole Mattingly, Sarah Crick, and the class for inviting me!

BuildSmart: Twice a month all the contractors, the architect, project managers, KCTCS reps and more meet on the BuildSmart projects. The progress is exciting! The Library should be available after next week; the Nursing student lounge is almost complete, new furniture arrives this Friday for the new biology/physics lab and nursing classroom. We chose the new carpet that will be installed in most offices in the A/S and ADM buildings over the holidays (see a sample in the ADM hallway by the displays) and the VCT (vinyl tile) that will be in hallways/classrooms in both buildings! New carpet will be installed in the Fine Arts Center beginning next week. The new ADM back facade is progressing nicely--and the front of the building looks fresh with the old bushes now removed.

Healthy on the Hill: Don't forget this special event on Monday!

Next Week: Most of next week I'll be out of state at a SACSCOC on-site committee visit. Paul Kasenow will be in charge on campus.
Project Increase Enrollment
Why HCC?

This week and next we focus on ITT students coming to HCC along with new students beginning in October term and current students taking more hours.

The ITT campus in Evansville closed recently mid-semester with the closure of the institution nationwide. This left a lot of students in various health, information technology, business and other fields out of class in all stages of their degree process.

ITT credits do not transfer directly to HCC and other public higher education institutions because of various accreditation and other restrictions. However, there are many ways for the skills and knowledge earned to be transferred to a degree program at HCC. All ITT students are invited to attend one of two upcoming open houses for information:
  • For former ITT Nursing students: Wednesday, September 14, 2016 from 3-5 p.m. in the Sullivan Technology Center (STC) Room 310. Representatives from the admissions department, financial aid, and the nursing department will be present.
  • For all other ITT students: Monday, September 19 from 5:30--7 p.m. in the START Center, Sullivan Technology Center (STC) 2nd floor. Representatives from admissions, financial aid, career services departments and program faculty will be present.
Many thanks to Dr. Carole Mattingly, Chad Phillips, Cary Conley, Andy Zellers, program coordinators and many others who are helping to find these students their best options at HCC.

HCC Celebrates the U.S. Constitution
Kevin Reid has assembled a new display for the library. The anniversary date for the U.S. Constitution is September 17. Kevin compiled related books, flags and a copy of the Constitution for library patrons to view.
