President's Perspective
Dr. Kris Williams

Kudos: To all of HCC's faculty and staff who are working to refine our current course offerings and scheduled to ensure smooth pathways to student completion. HCC has good overall scheduling, but there are many areas where tweaks to current offerings (and clearer ways of communicating pathways to students) would help ensure student success. That's our mission--to make possible the path to higher education and skills--and I applaud all the efforts. With that in mind, I encourage all faculty and staff who work in these areas to attend the PD session on September 9th, from 1-3 p.m. in STC 309 on creating a block schedule. You will look at examples from other institutions and Katie Griffis will provide applied examples using the last three semester's schedules. This session concludes with identification of "thin" or missing times/courses within our schedule and the identification of potential blocks. If you have any questions, please email Katie.Griffis@kctcs.edu or call her at 270-831-9606.

Nerds: The Wars began again with the Aluminum Boat Challenge-and 34 students participating!!!! The object was to make a boat out of 30 cm of aluminum foil to hold as many pennies as possible before it sank in a tub of water. Winners were the team of Scott Hoodenpyle and Mykela Jordan - their boat held 305 pennies before it sank and the students won a $10 prize through the College Foundation. Congratulations on the participation and engagement to Lori Threlkeld, Kara Becker, and anyone else who helped. More photos on Facebook.

Helping Low Income Students: A thought-provoking commentary on what we can do to help students succeed!

College Colors: Many thanks to all who wore their college colors last Thursday and Friday like these two ladies! Many more photos on Facebook.
