President's Perspective
Dr. Kris Williams

Thursday and Friday are College Colors Days!

FYE:
The FYE class I am teaching has been fun. The 15 students keep coming back, lots of folks on campus have been helping (like Angie Watson, who really kept their attention) and I have managed to (mostly) fill the 1 hour and 15 minutes each meeting. I also managed to do the no show report and use Blackboard--now I am learning Starfish...

Teaching Tips: Honolulu Community College has a great site of teaching tips. Check them out sometime!

HCHS Operation Preparation: Operation Preparation is an excellent opportunity to build community and student relationships. HCHS needs you to become a Superhero for our students with just 2 hours of your time. Volunteers will work with the junior class. You will have the option to speak with a group of students or a student individually on preparing for work in specific fields. 2016 Operation Preparation will run from September 12, 2016 - October 4, 2016. For more information, click here.

Open Auditions: Henderson Community Theater is auditioning for "Picasso at the Lapin Agile" by Steve Martin, at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 6, and Sept. 8, at the Henderson Fine Arts Center. Director Steve McCarty will cast eleven roles, including seven men and two-to-four women varying in ages from early 20s through 60s. The audition will include cold readings from the play.

glove-flag.jpg Hope you have a wonderful long Labor Day weekend--and remember the reason for the holiday: "dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. (DOL)" Your work IS valued!

Project Increase Enrollment
Why HCC? Ask Me!

An update on last week's enrollment
from Brian McMurtry in the IR/IE Office:
Last week was above average in regards to historic enrollments as 195 credit hours were taken. This is significantly higher than the 3-year average for this same week. We are at 100.3% of projected credit hours to be taken by credential-seeking students. While enrollments are up, some of these gains were offset by several students dropping classes in the last week. Most of these students are returning students, as opposed to first-time students.

Overall, we continue to track behind Fall 2015 by 6% to 8% in various categories. As you know, we had projected 4.1%, so it will be important for us to continue to push enrollment in October classes, as well as engage in best practices to retain our current students.
Fire!

Fire Drill Do's and Dont's

A fire drill will be held in the next three weeks (not during fall break). HCC holds fire, lockdown, and tornado drills each academic year to ensure students, faculty, and staff understand safe procedures.

As a reminder, if the fire alarm goes off, all persons are to leave the building immediately.
  • Use the stairwell, not the elevators.
  • A student in a wheelchair needing to go downstairs to exit should go to the top of the stairwell for assistance.
  • Evacuate using the closest safe exit.
  • Close, but do not lock, all office and classroom doors.
  • Instructors should ensure that all students have complied with the evacuation.
  • Designated floor monitors should check each room on their way out of the building.
Upon leaving the building everyone should gather at a safe distance. Do not re-enter the building until permission has been given.
