President's Perspective
Dr. Kris Williams

RC2C Update: Last week Rotary invited RC2C Scholars from HCC to attend a celebratory luncheon in their honor. Recent Scholar graduate Holli Melton eloquently shared her thoughts on the value of the RC2C program. Rob Carroll was the featured speaker. He had a family emergency so made a video in advance to serve as keynote. It is well worth watching and linked to my Facebook page.

Here's some data on our Scholars of 2015 (with thanks to Andy Zellers):
Total RC2C recipients in 2015-16 = 57
Total 1st Year Recipients = 35
Total 2nd Year Recipients = 22
Average GPA, Overall = 2.95
Average GPA, 1st Year Recipients = 3.09
Average GPA, 2nd Year Recipients = 2.73
Total credentials awarded = 5 (2 associate degrees, 3 certificates)
Total RC2C Scholarships Awarded = $61,063
Average Scholarship Amount =$1,071
Total receiving full $2,000 scholarship = 20 (35%)
Total receiving $250 minimum = 28 (49%)
Total receiving other amount = 9 (16%)

ADM Upgrade: The new BuildSmart-funded facade to the ADM building is coming right along. Come visit if you haven't seen the progress! While there, peak into the refreshed Writing Center on the second floor (with thanks to volunteers) and the new Honors Student Lounge, bottom floor.

Job Projections and Much More: The U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics recently announced the availability of occupation-related information, including projections for job openings through 2024, in its 2016-17 Occupational Outlook Handbook. The website is the go-to place for job seekers as well as career job changers, counselors, students, parents, teachers, training officials, and researchers. The site offers information on select occupations, including the fastest growing occupations, and the number of new jobs, median pay, entry-level education, work environment, and licensure or certification requirements.

Project Increase Enrollment
Why HCC? Ask Me!

Our attention turns to retaining the students we have in classes through phone and email support, use of predictive retention software Illume, and strong use of Starfish. Look for Starfish training coming up! Shannon Clements is working with HCHS to get these dual credit students enrolled; already there are 101 UCHS dual credit students in classes!

diploma_grad_cap.jpgAn update on last week's enrollment
from Brian McMurtry in the IR/IE Office: Now that the largest amount of enroll/drop activity has passed, we have a bit of perspective regarding Open Enrollment. 2,075 credit hours were taken, which is 11% less than normal. Some of this attributable to the heightened activity of our staff during the last part of July, but we have also noted that average credit hours taken per student has been somewhat lackluster, with counts ranging from 4.6 to 5.6 credit hours per student in the past three weeks.  We find ourselves sitting at -5.1% YTD among credential-seeking headcount. Our FTE Delivery Campus number is 832, about 5.5% less than last year. As a reference, we budgeted for a 4.1% decrease in credit hours. It is significant to note that 32 students who enrolled during Open Enrollment dropped 6 hours or more in the last week. Our next push in enrollment undoubtedly will involve enrollment in October classes, as well as implementing our SEM strategies for retention.
Grantline
Kim Calebs, KCTCS Grant Development Specialist

Introducing Grantline, the statewide peer support network for grant developers, writers, and administrators from across KCTCS. It doesn't matter if grants are part of your formal job description or an add-on to your regular job duties, you are invited to join. You are welcome whether you're faculty or staff, a longtime Principal Investigator, a new grant writer, or someone who just does grants on the side.

Grantline is a distribution list that will provide a venue for asking and answering questions, offering advice and insights, networking, and sharing tools and best practices-similar to the listserv many of you remember from the Council for Resource Development, but KCTCS-specific. Opt in here by sending an email!

Here's how it works:

You must opt in - simply respond with a "yes" or other affirmative and you'll be added to the list. After you've opted in, you'll be provided with the dedicated email address and distribution list name. Email the group any time you want to ask for or offer support on all things grant-related. Response may be sent individually or "reply all" just like any other email.
