President's Perspective
Dr. Kris Williams

Welcome Back!: HCC had first responders on campus to welcome back students. Henderson Police, Fire, and ambulance services were available to speak with students--and K-9 officer Aries was also on hand. Students could also try the low impact obstacle course. Here's a photo of the whole group with HCC Head Start students. The Dairette Grill provided music for the event. Many thanks to Janet Jackson and the Campus Engagement committee for working with first responders for the event. More photos on Instagram and Facebook.

Rebates: After five years of energy-saving enhancement projects, HCC recently earned a rebate award of nearly $19,000 from Kentucky Utilities Company. Now we need to Watch our Watts to keep the savings coming. Please turn out lights, keep small appliances out of offices, and focus on sustainability across the campus!

Write On: The HCC Writing Center will offer one-on-one writing consultations at the HCHS Preston Media Center. Beginning August 25, HCHS juniors and seniors can meet with an HCC writing tutor for help with their academic papers and creative writing assignments on Thursdays from 3:30-5 p.m. Bill Gary will be this semester's off-campus HCC Writing Center consultant at HCHS. This off-campus service is designed to promote quality writing, to enhance academic success, and to strengthen HCC's community connection.

A Solution: "A much more effective way to teach problem-solving is to guide students through complete or partially worked-out problem solutions and derivations using an active-learning structure called Thinking-Aloud Pair Problem Solving (TAPPS) (Felder and Brent, 2016)." More in Faculty Focus.

Project Increase Enrollment
Why HCC? Ask Me!

A second set of classes begins August 22nd. As we go through the fall term, we need to look at this late start and see if it is working for HCC. Should we have 16-, 12- and 8-week terms instead of 16-, 15- and 8-week terms?

Now we turn to a focus on retention. Strategies can include faculty calling all students who haven't shown up for class, faculty and staff calling all students within their first two-three weeks to make sure they are engaged in their classes and success strategies, and providing excellent tutoring and other support strategies.

diploma_grad_cap.jpgAn update on last week's enrollment
from Brian McMurtry in the IR/IE Office: As the fall term begins, our Open Enrollment period pushed us over our projected goal of 11,769 credit hours to be taken by credential-seeking students as 12,148 credit hours were taken. However, Chief Business Officer Jerry Gentry reports that the equivalent of 40 FTE (about 600 credit hours) were dropped due to non-payment, reducing us to 97% of projected credit hours. Hopefully, we will be able to re-enroll some of these students, but for the next few weeks, we will be working on enrolling students in late start and bi-term classes. Of course, retention is a key piece to the SEM plan. Early unofficial counts show that 394 of our 1,045 credential-seeking students from the spring did not return, for a retention rate of 62.3%
